"It's finally happening. The Messiah of Silence is about to awaken. Is killing Hotaru the only way to save the world from it's destruction? No! I can't accept that! I won't let it happen! There has to be a way to save everyone without spilling any blood! In the Name of the Moon, I will find a way!”
Usagi Tsukino

(CWi Episode: "Wake Up Call")

The Inner and Outer Guardians once again investigate Mugen Academy where they uncover a new plot organized by the last member of Witches 5 to steal a large quantity of Pure Hearts. Elsewhere, Kaolinite goes on a solo mission to capture what she believes is the Purest Heart of All. She succeeds and awakens the Messiah of Silence.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Badass Boast: Each of the Inner Guardians gets a cool intro when they transform in front of the Catalytic Witch.
Venus: With the power of Love and Beauty, I will save this planet!
Mercury: I won't permit the Evil Silence to happen! Douse yourself in water and repent!
Mars: You defile Pure Hearts. In the Name of Mars, I'll chastise you!
Jupiter: I won't let you have your way. I'll fill you with so much regret it'll leave you numb!
Moon: We are the Sailor Guardians! And In the Name of the Moon, we'll punish you!
  • Bathtub Bonding: Usagi and her daughter are shown bathing together in the start of the episode.
  • Best for Last: Upon their first meeting, Cyprine proclaims herself to be the last and most powerful member of Witches 5. And she lives up to her claim by giving the heroes a difficult fight. In Cloverway, Lita has this to say.
Lita: If you're so powerful, then why didn't they use you first?
  • Big Damn Heroes: Subverted. Tuxedo Mask and Sailor Pluto are unable to save Chibi-Moon as she's kidnapped by Kaolinite.
  • Call-Back: Mercury, Moon and Mars use their starter attacks from Season 1 to distract the Catalytic Witches.
  • Catapult Nightmare: Chibs does this after seeing her best friend be dragged into hell screaming.
  • Cliffhanger: Setsuna appears in Mamoru's apartment to tell the Inners that she and her Outer friends will kill Mistress 9 no matter what. And refusing to let Hotaru be sacrificed, the Inner Guardians transform and make their way to the ruins of Mugen Academy.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Kaolinite is furious to hear her cherished professor claim that Cyprine is "the only one he can count on".
  • Crucified Hero Shot: Hotaru is shown tied to a wooden cross during Chibi-usa's nightmare.
  • Divide and Conquer: Through effective teamwork and tight coordination, the Inner Guardians are able to separate the two witches and trick them into attacking each other.
  • Elemental Barrier: Professor Tomoe set up an electric purple barrier to ensure that the Guardians don't interfere with his Messiah's awakening.
  • Energy Absorption: The Catalytic Witches are able to absorb the Guardians' attacks to amplify their own energy blasts.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune are both shocked when the person Hotaru transforms into is not Sailor Saturn, but Mistress 9. They had no idea Hotaru was being used as a vessel for a Daimon and just assumed the Death Busters were trying to awaken Saturn's power to destroy everything.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Exploited. Kaolinite decides to target Chibi-usa for her Pure Heart knowing how close she and Hotaru, the host for her Messiah, were in the past.
  • Fighting from the Inside: Hotaru is still making an effort to reclaim her body so she can reunite with her old friend.
  • Floating in a Bubble: Cyprine instantly catches onto the Inners sneaking in and has them transported to her office in a giant red bubble of doom.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: Jupiter and Mars manage to trick Cyprine and Ptilol into chasing after them. And with the battlefield covered in Mercury's Bubble Spray, the two Guardians lead them into a position where the two witches end up using their One-Hit Kill attacks on each other.
  • Hope Spot: Mars uses Burning Mandala to burn the witch before she can strike. While it looks like she got a direct hit, she's soon taken out by two surprise energy blasts.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Kaolinite discovers that Chibs is also a Sailor Guardian.
    • The Inners learn that Hotaru's dad is the big boss of the Death Busters.
    • Sailor Mercury figures out the Death Busters' plan of inserting Mistress 9 within Hotaru to keep Sailor Saturn from awakening.
  • Interrupted Declaration of Love: The Bruja Escarlata gets shot with a bolt of lightning while professing her love for Professor Tomoe.
  • Killed Off for Real: After being killed once and brought back to life, Kaolinite dies permanently in this episode, with Mistress 9 declaring that her job is now over.
  • Last Words: Just before she passes out from her lack of Pure Heart, Chibi-usa expresses relief that Hotaru is alright.
  • Life Energy: The cats manage to sync Mamoru's life energy with his daughter's so she can avoid dying.
  • Mass Hypnosis: Cyprine manages to hypnotize Mugen Academy's student body to come to the school late at night to steal their Pure Hearts.
  • Mood Whiplash: Usagi can see that Chibs is still somber over the disappearance of her gothic friend. But when she tries to cheer her up, she ends up tripping on a soap bar which leads to her crashing into the tub.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Chibi Moon ventures into the abandoned Tomoe mansion hoping to find Hotaru on her own. This leaves her as easy prey for the Bruja Escarlata who intends to reap her Pure Heart.
  • Nightmare Sequence: Chibi-usa has a nightmare where she sees Hotaru crucified and being taken to hell by a legion of the dead.
  • No Body Left Behind: Happens to Cyprine and Ptilol, as their attacks simply vaporise each other, and later to Kaolinite, whose body just vanishes into nothing after death.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Ptilol and Cyprine get this reaction just as they're about to kill each other.
    • Sailor Neptune is aghast when she sees Mistress 9 as she's never seen her before.
  • One-Hit Kill: After toying with their food for long enough, Cyprine and Ptilol amp up their power so that their next attacks will kill the Sailor Guardians.
  • Red Herring: All this time Sailor Uranus believed that Sailor Saturn was the Messiah of Silence. When in reality, it was another woman by the name of Mistress 9.
  • Self-Disposing Villain: Cyprine and Ptilol end up disintegrating each other trying to take out the Sailors.
  • Self-Duplication: Cyprine's special ability involves creating another twin of herself, a red-version named Ptilol, who can harness the same attacks as the original.
  • Trash the Set: Mistress 9's awakening proves to be so devastating and flashy that Mugen Academy begins to crumble into ruin.
  • Wham Episode: The being within Hotaru is awakened at last, and it's not Sailor Saturn, it's Mistress 9, someone the Outer Guardians had no clue even existed. And she's awakened thanks to Chibi Moon's pure heart.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Averted with the Mugen Academy students. As the Sailor Team leaves, Venus questions what became of them while Artemis assures her that they (him, Luna, Tuxedo Mask and Pluto) helped evacuate everyone.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Kaolinite is blasted with lightning from Mistress 9 declaring that she fulfilled her purpose in life.
  • Villain Opening Scene: The beginning of the end features Cyprine, the last witch, commanding the Mugen Academy students to come to the school in the dead of night.

"Usako... we have to do what we can. And right now, that's to fight. No matter what it takes, we must fight for what we believe in!"
