How helpless is modern man when confronted with the wrath of nature?

“Look Natsumi, I know love can be tough sometimes, but that's no reason to stop coming to class. You're my friend. So if there's any way I can help you, just let me know. Huh? There's a Makaiju in your house? Well if that's the case, I am Sailor Moon! And In the Name of the Moon, I'll punish you!”
Sailor Moon Performer

(DIC Episode: "Secret Garden")

Seijuro and Natsumi have been missing several days of school due to the declining health of their precious tree. Wanting to support her new friends, Usagi would go on to visit them on a daily basis unaware that the two aliens have decided to target her to save the Makaiju.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Blinded by the Light: After Usagi opens the forbidden door, the Makaiju bursts with bright light and sends it's roots after her.
  • Butt-Monkey: Luna forces Artemis to stick his paw into the vial holding the Makaiju root to demonstrate how dangerous it is.
  • Call-Back:
    • Makoto is annoyed with having to put up with Natsumi's hostile attitude, which makes sense given their last confrontation.
    • Mamoru shows up to check on Natsumi as an act of gratitude for helping him with the Snow White production.
  • The Cameo: Jadeite and the Youma Morga appear as part of the Sailor Moon show.
  • Cassandra Truth: Usagi tries to keep Mamoru from visiting Natsumi by saying that she's faking being sick and how she has an evil tree in her apartment. But Mamoru laughs it off and proceeds with his visit.
  • Cliffhanger: The episode ends with the newly transformed Sailor Guardians preparing to venture into apartment building that's been overrun by the Makaiju's roots.
  • Coordinated Clothes: Seijuro and Natsumi wear matching purple outfits which Makoto thinks is weird since that's usually something couples do, not siblings.
  • Designated Victim: To Usagi's horror, Naru and Umino are once again victims of another energy draining plot.
  • Don't Touch It, You Idiot!: In her first visit, Usagi comes dangerous close to opening the elevator doors that lead to the Makaiju and is only stopped by Seijuro.
  • Evil Is Petty: It only makes sense that the Makaiju Aliens would send their Cardian to drain energy during a public performance dedicated to their hated enemy.
  • Famed In-Story: Sailor Moon's heroic endeavors have earned enough public adoration that they've made a public stage show in her honor.
  • Foreshadowing: After grasping onto Usagi with it's roots, the Makaiju generates a healthy sprout. Usagi is revealed to be the key to the tree's health but for unexpected reasons.
  • History with Celebrity: Naru expresses pride on how her and Umino have been able to meet Sailor Moon.
  • Hope Spot: The Aliens notice that the Makaiju has grown a healthy sprout in it's roots. But after Ail orders Yamandakka to pour it's stolen energy onto the sprout, it withers away.
  • Human Sacrifice: An tries to sacrifice Usagi to the Makaiju after seeing the stunning reaction it delivered after coming into contact with her.
  • Hypocrite: Both Ail and An accuse the other of being unfaithful despite their own romantic interests.
  • Internal Reveal: After researching the tree root that was stuck on Usagi, the cats explain to the Guardians about the Makaiju. From there, the Guardians deduce that Seijuro and Natsumi are really Ail and An.
  • Mood Whiplash: The happy go-lucky atmosphere of the Sailor Moon performance is ruined by the appearance of Yamandakka who successfully steals the audience's energy.
  • Multiple Head Case: Yamandakka has four heads with a distinct emotion for each one: Happy, Anger, Sadness and Silliness.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Usagi is so invested in making sure that Natsumi and Seijuro go back to school that she resorts to waking up extra early to see them and offer to walk to school together.
  • Petal Power: Yamandakka sends out giant lotus petals that latch onto victims and drains them of their energy.
  • Red Sky, Take Warning: The episode ends on a shot of the Makaiju with an ominous red sky and black clouds overhead.
  • Scream Discretion Shot: The Sailor Guardians hear Usagi screaming as the episode ends on a rising shot of Ail and An's apartment infested by the Makaiju.
  • Skipping School: The Aliens have missed out on attending Juuban Junior High in order to attend to their sacred tree.
  • Soulful Plant Story: The Makaiju begins to wither and decay which concerns the Aliens who've tried to nurture it.
  • Suddenly Voiced: The alien tree speaks it's first words after the Cardian tries to drain Usagi of her energy.
Makaiju: I can't take it anymore! Enough! Enough! Enough!
  • To Be Continued: The DiC version adds this as a subtitle at the end of the episode.
  • Two Scenes, One Dialogue: The episode starts with Seijuro and Natsumi catching their romantic love interests (Usagi and Mamoru) and declare that today is the day that they win their hearts.
  • Unwanted Assistance: Natsumi has no appreciation for Usagi, Makoto and Ami checking in on her and her "brother" and orders them to shoo.
  • What Is This Feeling?: Seijuro notices a strange feeling in his heart, especially whenever he's around Usagi. An feels the same way when Mamoru comes to visit her.
  • When Trees Attack: The Makaiju unleashes it's devastating roots that rip apart the apartment building.
