Recap / Rupert S 03 E 03 Rupert And The Dragon Race

Go To

Pong Ping invites Rupert, Edward, and Bill (which includes Toby) to his house to show them a big surprise — a couch his friend the Mandarin sent him from China. The couch will enable Pong Ping and his friends to attend the Mandarin’s dragon races because it grants everyone who sits on it one wish, flying to whoever, whatever, or wherever the person wishes. Unfortunately, everyone is told this fact after uttering something including the words "I wish," which leads to a lot of complications, such as Bill, Toby, and Edward being stranded in the mountainous Valley of Dragons in China, while Rupert and Pong Ping get stuck in a snowstorm while trying to find them.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Anger Born of Worry: Bill is furious at Toby for wandering off and playing with baby dragons, but he quickly runs out of steam and just hugs him, grateful that he’s all right.
  • Be Careful What You Say: Even those who know how the couch works aren't careful about what they say or when they say it. Not one single wish plays out without something going horribly wrong.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Yum and his father couldn't be happier to help Rupert, given how he helped Yum when he was captured by Sir Jasper.
  • The Bus Came Back: Rupert and Pong Ping run into Yum the yeti in the Far High Mountains, whom they helped back in "Rupert and Little Yum".
  • Field Power Effect: The dragon chasing the boys gives up when they reach the frigid, snowy part of the mountains — dragons and cold don't mix.
  • The Friends Who Never Hang: This episode provides a rare occasion where Rupert's friends are shown spending a good chunk of time together without him, as Bill and Edward are the only ones who get dragged to the Valley of Dragons.
  • Here We Go Again!: The episode ends with Rupert sitting on the couch with Bill and saying "I just wish I could show you how much [Yum] has grown..."
  • It's Probably Nothing:
Rupert: It was probably just the wind.
Pong Ping: It is often said that the wind howls like a wolf... but I fear this time, it is a wolf howling like the wind!
  • Oh, No... Not Again!: Bill says this at the end after Rupert accidentally makes a wish.
  • Two Lines, No Waiting: Rupert and Pong Ping try to fly the Sky Cycle through a blizzard while Bill and Edward run and hide from wild dragons.
  • We Need a Distraction: Rupert distracts the dragon in the climax while his friends fly away.
