Recap / Runescape Pieces Of Hate

Go To

It's back to the Rock with you, and this time, things are creepy. The Customs Officers are clearly not in their right minds (and when you search their offices, you'll find some of them trapped in glowing green pods), prisoners are disappearing, and Crassians and barrels of a strange black stone are everywhere. You barely escape with a few other prisoners, and you return to Mos Le'Harmles under siege by Rabid Jack's zombie forces.

Once those are repelled, you have to go save Braindeath Island, where Mi-Gor is holding Captain Braindeath and his brewers hostage in exchange for the secret ingredient to his 'rum'. You help them to defeat the invaders by carrying out Operation Witchwood, which consists of blowing up the brewery equipment to soak the zombies in 'rum', and then releasing the 'Rum'-Pumped Crabs from the nearby dungeon (with the help of Baron Von Hattenkramper) to absolutely savage the 'rum'-soaked zombies. The kitten cutscenes return, but they're not really much help, as the narrator tells you that you're a monster for doing this, even to evil zombie pirates.

If you think a scene of playful kittens will spare you from my horror, you are mistaken. Do you really think you can save them, [Player Name]?

After then, it's finally time to descend to a sunken reef to find where Rabid Jack is hiding. You eventually defeat him in a boss fight where you barely prevent yourself from going mad by getting drunk out of your skull on 'rum', and kill Jack by breaking an ancient mechanism to seal him away along with the mysterious black hands that aided him. Finally, Rabid Jack is gone (if possibly not forever), he took whatever mysterious evil he'd summoned with him, and the pirates can relax.

... And what's up with that weird kitten that keeps appearing to you?

Pieces of Trope

  • Animalistic Abomination: The kitten.
Player: You're not really a kitten, are you?
Kitten: I am not. But then, you're not really a human either. Neither of those things matter. Do you really think you can save them?
  • Arc Words: "Do you really think you can save them?"
  • The Fourth Wall Will Not Protect You: The narrator during the final cutscene on Braindeath Island addresses the player, mocking them for what they did to the pirates and saying that kitten cutscenes aren't going to work against their brand of horror.
  • Relax-o-Vision: A surprisingly self-aware and downright sinister version. The kittens cover up horrible violence as usual, but it's implied that the kitten cutscenes are an Eldritch Abomination messing with your mind.
  • Unexpectedly Dark Episode: The pirate questline before this was goofy and farcial. There's still a lot of humor here, but Pieces of Hate injects the story with a big dose of pure Lovecraft. The Relax-o-Vision is implied to be an Eldritch Abomination's method of communicating with you, the Customs Office is mind-controlled by Crassians, and the only way you can keep yourself sane during Rabid Jack's boss battle is to get absolutely stinking drunk off 'rum' for the whole battle.
  • You Monster!: The narrator during the Braindeath Island cutscene where the 'Rum'-Pumped Crabs are released against the zombies calls the player a monster for it.
