Go To

The ninth episode of the sixth season of Rugrats (1991).

Hand Me Downs

When Angelica tells Tommy that older siblings disappear when their parents give their old toys to younger siblings, Tommy tries to keep his old toys away from Dil.

Angelica's Ballet

Jealous of Susie participating in a ballet, Angelica starts her own ballet with the babies.

"Hand Me Downs" provides examples of:

  • Believing Their Own Lies: Stu and Didi give Tommy's old toys to Dil, and Angelica tells Tommy that once his parents give all of his old stuff to Dil, he'll disappear. In the end, Susie explains that a person doesn't disappear from giving away hand-me-downs. Angelica expresses her thankfulness on being an only child, and thus gets to keep all of her stuff. But then Drew comes by and tells her that he and Charlotte have decided to give all of her old stuff to Tommy. This causes Angelica to scream in fear that she'll disappear once her parents give all of her old stuff to Tommy.
  • Crying a River: Discussed; Angelica is trying to scare the babies by claiming that giving away hand-me-downs makes you disappear. She claims that this happened to Susie's older sister Yvonne and the reason why Susie hasn't mentioned Yvonne is because she's too sad and she once cried so much that the Carmichaels needed to take a boat to the bathroom just so Susie could blow her nose.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Discussed; when Tommy sees how happy Dil is playing with his old toys, he decides he doesn't want Dil to be sad and decides to give him his old toys even if it means he's going to disappear.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After Angelica spends the episode convincing Tommy that he will disappear from having his old toys being given away to Dil, Drew decides to give Angelica's old toys to Tommy.
  • Misblamed: An In-Universe example; Stu worries that Dil is going to suffer the burden of receiving Tommy's old toys, due to Stu himself having to suffer wearing Drew's hand-me-down clothes. When Tommy takes his old toys away from Dil, Didi finds them and accuses Stu of doing this.
  • Tempting Fate: Near the end of the episode, Angelica expresses her relief that she doesn't have to worry about giving her old toys away to a younger sibling, due to being an only child. Drew then arrives and tells her that he is going to give her old toys away to Tommy.

"Angelica's Ballet" provides examples of:

  • Ballet Episode: Susie tells the babies about ballet class, and Angelica decides to make her own play with the babies starring in it to spite Susie.
  • Creative Closing Credits: Cynthia, She's a Really Cool Dancer plays during the closing credits.
  • Dragged into Drag: Angelica makes Chuckie wear a sparkly red dress, which Chuckie isn't happy about.
  • Malaproper: Angelica mispronounces "position" as "physician".
  • Playing a Tree: Angelica casts Dil, in his walker, as a tree.
  • Rouge Angles of Satin: Angelica's production of Angelica's Lake includes a bucket of water that she labelled "Lak".
  • Start My Own: When Susie tells the babies about her ballet school's production of Swan Lake, Angelica decides to start her own play called Angelica's Lake, with the babies starring in it.
  • Unreliable Narrator: Angelica tells Susie that she graduated from ballet school after only two lessons because she danced so well. The flashback shows Angelica knocking down the other students, and Drew having to take her away after the teacher got into an argument with him.
