Go To

The twentieth episode of the sixth season of Rugrats (1991).

Share and Share a Spike

Tommy doesn't want to share Spike with Dil, so the babies try to find Dil a pet of his own.

Tommy For Mayor

Tommy and Phil (backed by Susie and Angelica, respectively) compete to be the leader of their group of friends.

"Share and Share a Spike" provides examples of:

  • Animals See in Monochrome: Whenever Spike's point of view is shown, it is in black and white.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: When Phil and Lil begin to argue over which of them makes a better pet for Dil, they see some ants and decide to follow them.
  • Baby See, Baby Do: Invoked; to train Phil and Lil to be Dil's pets, Tommy has them watch Spike and copy whatever he does.
  • Big Brother Instinct: When Tommy sees Angelica trying to take Dil's muffin, he tells her to leave it alone. When she refuses, Spike tries to save Dil, and Tommy's first instinct is to help Spike. After Spike eats Dil's muffin to keep Angelica from doing the same, then swats Angelica's muffin out of her hand, where it lands in the mud, Tommy decides to give his muffin to Dil.
  • Chronic Pet Killer: Phil and Lil are implied to be these, as when Angelica tells Tommy that the twins have turtles and a goldfish for pets, the twins say "Not anymore." in sad tones.
  • Continuity Nod:
  • "Eureka!" Moment: After Dil pulls the head off of Tommy's stuffed dog, the babies suggest that they give Dil someone who likes to play and dig, get dirty, eat bugs, and be disgusting in general. This gives Tommy the idea to have Phil and Lil be Dil's pets.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: When Didi and Stu see Tommy giving Dil his stuffed dog, they think Tommy is sharing with Dil. Stu assures Didi that Tommy comes from a long line of generous, giving Pickles men, when Drew comes in, asking Stu if he can borrow his weed whacker for a few hours. Stu tells him "Are you insane?! It's brand new! Get your own, Drew!"
  • Laser-Guided Karma: When Angelica takes Dil's muffin, Spike eats it before she can. Angelica then reveals that she still has her muffin, but before she can eat it, Spike swats it out of her hand with his tail, and it falls in the mud.
  • Mouth Cam:
    • Early in this episode, a view of the inside of Phil's mouth is shown just as he is about to eat a waffle, only for Lil to snatch it from him.
    • This episode ends with a view of the inside of Spike's mouth as he licks Tommy and Dil.
  • Trouser Space: Near the beginning of this episode, Phil pulls a waffle out of his pants.

"Tommy For Mayor" provides examples of:

  • Alliterative Name: The name of the mayoral candidate that Didi tries to get elected is Shiela Swann.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: During the race between Tommy and Phil, Angelica squirts baby oil onto the ground so Tommy can slip on it and Phil can win. Susie finds out and calls Angelica out on it.
  • Decided by One Vote: Near the end of the episode, the babies cast their ballots, but since they're all a bunch of scribbles, they have to say who they voted for. Tommy, Chuckie, and Susie all voted for Tommy, while Phil, Lil, and Angelica all voted for Phil. Dil is the only one who has yet to vote, but he has a hard time deciding because he doesn't want to hurt either candidate's feelings. After Tommy assures Dil that neither one of them will get upset if they lose, Dil votes for Tommy.
  • Election Day Episode: This episode has Tommy run against Phil in an election for the leader of the babies. Angelica becomes Phil's campaign manager, and Susie becomes Tommy's.
  • Hates Baths: When Phil give his mayoral speech, one of the things he promises if he's elected is no more baths.
  • Malaproper:
    • Angelica mispronounces elected as "elicted", which leads to Phil licking Tommy.
    • The babies mispronounce George Washington as "George Washing Machine".
  • Politicians Kiss Babies: To get Phil on the voters' good side, Angelica tells him to kiss babies (keep in mind that Phil himself is a baby). Chuckie and Lil are not amused. When Tommy asks Susie if he should do this, Susie tells him it's not necessary.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Angelica makes Tommy and Phil try to chop down the tree in Tommy's backyard, due to Charlotte having told her and Susie the story of George Washington. When Tommy sees the tree, he decides against chopping it down due to all the good times it brought him. He says that he doesn't want to be mayor if he has to chop the tree down to do it.
