Go To

The sixth episode of the third season of Rocko's Modern Life.

Fish 'N' Chumps

Rocko, Heffer, and Filburt go on a deep sea fishing trip and get more than the catch of the day.

Camera Shy

A home movie starring Rocko becomes the centerpiece of the Chameleon Brothers latest project, much to his humiliation.

"Fish 'N' Chumps provides examples of:

  • Always Need What You Gave Up: When the trio is throwing away everything that seems suspicious, Heffer idiotically rips out the boat's engine and throws it overboard, stranding them at sea.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": After Filb annoys him one time too many with his watch, Heffer screams "Will you SHUT UP!?" before slapping Filburt's wrist and causing the watch to fly off into the water.
  • Bland-Name Product: Rocko, Heffer, and Filburt have a Wigloo brand cooler, a parody of Igloo.
  • The Cameo: Ralph Bighead appears in this episode, playing a Leitmotif on bass when the fish reel Heffer in, until Filburt takes it away.
  • Fishing Episode: This episode has Rocko, Heffer and Filburt going fishing, only to discover that the fish are fishing for them.
  • The Hunter Becomes the Hunted: Or rather, the fishers become the ones being fished.
  • Instant Wristwatch: For this episode and this episode only, Filburt has a fancy new watch that he can't stop showing off. Heffer in particular is annoyed by this and eventually throws it into the ocean... where it gets used by bait by the fish to catch Filburt.
  • Kraken and Leviathan: When the guys try to use cheese as bait, a Giant Squid appears and asks for more cheese. Later, the squid rescues the boys for more cheese.
  • Left the Background Music On: When Heffer is being pulled in by the fish, a Leitmotif is being played by Ralph Bighead on bass. Filburt takes Ralph's bass to keep him from playing it.
  • Oh, Crap!: Rocko and Heffer when Filburt finds his watch, which was thrown overboard, because it's obvious to them that it's being used as bait.
  • Obliviously Evil: To Rocko, Heffer and Filburt, the fact that they are being fished is unnerving and terrifying. To the fishing fish, however, it's just a fun day out fishing.
  • Out-of-Character Moment: In terms of the wristwatch plot, Heffer and Filburt seem to have switched personalities with Filburt being overly enthusiastic to the point of annoyance and Heffer's deadpan response of "Put a sock in it, Filb."
  • Pirate Peg Leg: The ship captain Crappie Jack not only has peg legs, but peg arms and peg eyes.
  • Running Gag: "Hey, Hef, ask me what time it is."

"Camera Shy" provides examples of:

  • Affectionate Nickname: Rocko's parents call him "Boo-Boo" in their letter to him.
  • Ambiguously Gay: The Chameleon Brothers are at their most flamboyant in this episode when they speak in the swishiest Mexican accents imaginable and call Rocko "baby" and "honey".
  • Cheshire Cat Grin: Heffer has a priceless facial expression when he says "NAAAKEEED".
  • Department of Redundancy Department: This exchange between Heffer and Filburt:
    Heffer: He's completely... naaaaaakeddddd!
Filburt: (with spirals in his eyes) WITH NO CLOTHES ON!
  • Dirty Old Woman: Mrs. Bighead. After the Chameleon Brothers put La Vie Moderne De Pinto up for sale, she offers to buy nine copies of it.
  • Gag Censor: Rocko has a weirdly crotch-restricted censor bar when he walks down the staircase nude. He is also sent censor bars by his parents to autograph for his friends and family.
  • Inherently Funny Words: Heffer gleefully exclaiming the word "Naked".
    Heffer: NAAAKEEED!
  • Large Ham: The Chameleon brothers.
"OH, LOOK, it's our little FILLLM-MAAAKERS HEERE!!!" "Goofy sound effects? WITH WHIPPED CREEAM ON TOPP!!!" "THAT'S OURR MASSTERPIECE!!" "Everyone who is wishing to look artistic will want one...OF OUR ELEVEN THOUSAND COPIES!!" "EVERYONE is FRAPPING IT to our bought-out FILM! Have an espresso, baaaaaby!"
  • Le Film Artistique: The Chameleon Brothers edit Rocko's home movie footage into a fancy arthouse video titled "La Vie Moderne De Pinto" and it frequently focuses on Rocko's nakedness, much to Rocko's horror. The film also utilizes Fauxlosophic Narration from the Chameleons, random bits of stock footage (such as flowers opening) and title cards reading "regret" and "pineapples", among other things.
The Chameleon Brothers' Narration: Who am I? Am I you? No, I am not you.
  • Naked People Are Funny: Heffer and Filburt get footage of Rocko sleepwalking naked, "With no clothes on!" Much of the episode is Rocko trying to get as many copies of the tape off the street.
  • New-Age Retro Hippie: Two hippies watch Rocko's edited home movie.
    Hippie 1: Far out.
    Hippie 2: Like, zonkaaaay.
  • Please Put Some Clothes On: While they're proud of their son for his movie winning the Australian Film Festival, his parents still send him $10 so he can get a bathrobe.
  • The Unreveal: Rocko wants to shoot footage of a trick Spunky can do, but just as he does it, the battery runs out on the camcorder. The audience hears Heffer and Filburt oohing at it, but the screen is completely black.
  • Voice Clip Song: The Chameleon Brothers' edited version of Rocko's home movie uses repeated sound clips of Heffer and Rocko during the footage of Rocko in his house naked.
  • Wingding Eyes:
    • Filbert's eyes become spirals when mentioning Rocko has no clothes on.
    • The Chameleon Brothers' eyes get stars in them at one point.
  • With Friends Like These...: Heffer and Filburt film Rocko sleepwalking naked, which ends up causing a big ordeal for Rocko, but never once do they so much as suffer a lick of guilt for their little prank.
