Tropes:

  • Because I Said So: Sheriff Mike tells Deputy Liv to stay back from restraining a suspect but she doesn't. When he asks her why she didn't, she quite reasonably asks why she would, given that she was perfectly capable of doing so. He tells her it's because he said so, though his unstated reasoning is that he's worried he'll lose her like he lost his partner back in Washington D.C.
  • Blatant Lies: "I'm a dog person now."
  • Brain Bleach: Sheriff Mike tells Mayor Ben that Cletus is in a humping stage, asking him if he knows how to get deep stains out of couch cushions. Ben asks in return if Mike knows anything about getting disgusting images out of his head.
  • Exact Words:
    • Mike told Liv that she could trust her gut off-duty, meaning her UFO-sighting line of inquiry. She uses those exact words to justify handcuffing him to a park bench until he explains his recent odd behavior.
    • The man that confronts Harry at the cafe asks him to tell him that he at least destroyed the medical records. Harry tells him that he destroyed the medical records. The man asks if he's just saying that; Harry replies that he said to tell him that.
  • Last Request: No. 42/Octopus requests to be eaten by Harry, specifically in butter sauce alongside a glass of Chardonnay. Harry complies, simultaneously mourning and enjoying the taste.
  • Let's Meet the Meat: No. 42's dying request is for Harry to eat his dead body with butter sauce and a really nice glass of Chardonnay.
  • Manly Tears: Sheriff Mike breaks down after opening up to Deputy Liv about his best friend, Jesse.
  • Mistaken from Behind: Harry, wrapped up in thought, loses Asta in the sea of pedestrians. He panics when the woman he approaches turns out not to be her.
  • Mushroom Samba: Harry experiences this after taking LSD. In his mind, the paintings reach out to him, his body morphs into alien state, and billboards swirl. Though the subsequent episode reveals that the body morphing wasn't just in his mind.
  • Public Secret Message: The locations of Goliath's murals create Ursa Major, which only Harry knows is a reference to where their planet's sun/Goliath's location is.
  • Really Dead Montage: No. 42 gets one when he dies.
  • The Reveal: Harry Vanderspeigle and Sam Hodges were investigating a company called Galvan/Powell Group, but Harry was involved with them. He killed Sam Hodges after being instructed to after revealing to them that Sam was talking about possibly going to the police. He then got a pay-off in the form of a "money bag" which the alien Harry Vanderspeigle discovered after killing him.
  • Secret Identity: Nobody has ever seen the reclusive artist Goliath.
  • Sensory Overload: Harry is overwhelmed by the "sea of humanity" when he emerges onto the New York street.
  • Stealing from the Till: The cashier at the pizza place pockets Harry's "closet cash" rather than putting it aside as a shared tip for the entire staff.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Harry’s bizarre alien call at the art gallery, and the subsequent failure of his genetic camouflage while he’s wandering the streets of NYC tripping on acid, attracts basically zero attention from the local population, the implication being that this is New York and nobody gets fazed by anything, ever.
  • Wham Line: "How long have you known Harry is an alien?"
