Go To

Tropes

  • Bait-and-Switch Accusation: When the Sheriff looks into Harry's freezer, he pauses and utters "well, well, well." Then it's revealed he noticed the bison meat, not the body.
  • Beautiful Dreamer: Harry watches Jay sleep on the couch at the hospital which causes irritation in Asta. He then explains that he is admiring her for sleeping since he cannot have any at night.
  • Brain Bleach: Harry's reaction when he looks up "circumcision" on the internet.
  • …But He Sounds Handsome: Harry reassures Max's mother that he's not an alien...which is a shame, as he's heard they're pretty cool!
  • Chekhov's Gun: Harry looking up how to do a circumcision ends up helping him stave off Mike by using a baby's foreskin as a substitute for the skin sample Mike demanded from the severed foot of the real Harry fished out of the lake.
  • Dead Man's Chest: Harry has hidden the body of the real Harry in a cooler in his basement, underneath a pile of frozen meat. And how the sheriff demands a look inside.
  • Embarrassing Relative Teacher: Harry's able to convince Max's mother that Max's "stories" about his being an alien are the result of his making them up to get her to pay attention to him. As she's a teacher at his school, her public displays of affection at the school cafeteria only end up embarrassing Max further.
  • Failed a Spot Check: When Kate comes over to seek Harry's advice about how to deal with Max and his accusations of Harry being an alien, she completely fails to notice the apple floating above a plate on one of his tables. As she sits down, he stealthily covers it with a cloth.
  • Hypocritical Humor: When the Harry alien refers to the lake the foot of the human Harry was found in as "my lake" to D'Arcy, she tells him that the lake belongs to the state of Colorado. She asks if he's trying to impress her and suggests that he be a little less needy and a little more sensitive because somebody's died, then shouts "Come on, can we see the foot?!"
  • Ma'am Shock: Asta and her friends are called "cougars" and "MILFs" when they accidentally attend a teenager's party.
  • Mistaken for Pedophile: Asta and her friends accidentally attend a teenager's party. One girl angrily insults the "cougars" but no one else seems to mind.
  • Nightmare Fuel Coloring Book: Max's mother is concerned about her son's scary alien drawings.
  • Political Overcorrectness: Harry accidentally makes Mike go on a rant about PC culture when he tries to throw him off his trail by pointing out that the Serial Killer he's looking for could be a woman.
  • Precision F-Strike: Subverted: when Harry rips down all Max's posters of him, he tries to rub it in with insults like "dickhead" and "shit for brains." Unfortunately, his command of social situations is poor enough that Max basically shrugs it off and ends up verbally embarrassing him again.
  • She Knows Too Much: Kate (Max's mother) comes into Harry's cabin to discuss Max going "crazy" over Harry being an alien. Harry grabs a kitchen knife with the intent to "Chucky" her until Kate states she sides with Harry and that she doesn't believe Max at all. Harry is relieved, but still frantically begs Kate to move her family far far away. Kate shoots that down saying her husband is the town's mayor.
  • Wild Teen Party: D'Arcy, Asta, and Kayla attend a party at their old friend JT's house, only to find it was a high school party thrown by his son of the same name.

I Hear They're Pretty Cool

On "Resident Alien," Harry Vanderspeigle is most definitely not an alien. It's too bad, though, because he's heard they're pretty cool.

How well does it match the trope?
