Ashley A. has been kicked out of the club for accidentally wearing the wrong color clothes for Purple Day, so she befriends Gretchen. A solar eclipse is coming, and Gretchen wants to make a proper viewer for it.
Tropes:
- Apology Gift: The gang, as an apology to Gretchen, stole blueprints for her solar eclipse camera from the Ashleys clubhouse, and made a normal version without the pink cardboard. They admit she was right to say they weren't showing interest in her projects.
- Bait-and-Switch: The Ashleys are seemingly disgusted at Ashley A. lowering herself to befriending a "loser geek" like Gretchen, only for it to turn out they were referring to Ashley A. as a geek and thought Gretchen deserved better.
- Bait the Dog: When a second grader enters the school while the Ashleys are sitting at the entrance, Ashley Q. says to the second grader she likes her outfit, only for her and the Ashleys say "Not!", much to her disappointment.
- Big "NO!": Ashley A. upon realizing that it's Purple Day.
- Both Sides Have a Point: The gang tells Gretchen that Ashley A. isn't going to be a good friend to her. They end up proven right as Ashley A. ditches her after the girls accidentally wreck her pinhole camera. Gretchen retorts that none of them were interested in her science projects and at least Ashley A. is showing some interest. She's also right, as the gang admits.
- Disproportionate Retribution: The Ashleys kick out Ashley A. for forgetting to wear Purple on Purple day. Justified as it is the Anniversary of the day the Ashley’s first met, and wearing a different color signified that she forgot. Inverted when they take her back for saying at least Gretchen's pinhole camera wasn't shoes.
- Evil Is Petty: The Ashleys work to sabotage Gretchen's new friendship with Ashley A., purely so that she won't be happy. It's low even for them.
- Hair-Trigger Avalanche: Ashley A. accidentally causes the Diggers' tunnel to cave in by shouting.
- Irony: "First Name Ashley" showed Spinelli needing her friends' help to leave the Ashley club. It turns out all she needed to do was not wear purple on Purple Day.
- Insignia Rip-Off Ritual: As the other Ashleys cast Ashley A. out, they remove her headband, rip the teddy bear head from her backpack, and take off her necklace, trampling them underfoot.
- Paste Eater: When Gus tells the others that Gretchen is hanging out with Ashley A., they assume that he's been eating glue. He hasn't.
- Positive Friend Influence: Ashley A. becomes nicer and more interested in science under Gretchen's tutelage. Sadly, it doesn't last by the end of the episode.
- Purely Aesthetic Glasses: Ashley A. starts wearing glasses from hanging out with Gretchen.
- Status Quo Is God: By the end of the episode, the Ashleys get back together.
- Total Eclipse of the Plot: A plot point is that Gretchen is making a pinhole camera out of a cardboard box to view the upcoming solar eclipse.
- Western Zodiac: Gretchen, whose birthday is March 23, is an Aries. Ashley Q. is a Leo, and Ashley A. is a Gemini.
- When It All Began / Flashback: We get treated to when the Ashleys first met in what appears to be Pre-K.
