Recap / Re Boot S 1 E 3 Quick And The Fed

Go To

When Dot gets hurt by a magnet Bob took from Megabyte, the Guardian must go get some "slow food" from Al's Diner to fix her. The errand gets complicated when a game drops Bob into a game of knights.

This episode has examples of

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Bob saying he needs slow food fast prompts a laugh from Al's waiter.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Throughout the game, Bob keeps hearing Dot pleading for help, so he assumes she's the damsel. By the time he finally gets to the top of the tower, he sees that it's Enzo who has a megaphone to make him sound like Dot.
  • Batman Gambit: With Hack and Slash on his tail and a gamecube about to drop, Bob opens a vid window to tell the villains that they'll never catch him. He knows they'll immediately stop and engage him in conversation, giving him enough time to be in position to enter the game without interference.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Megabyte shows up at the end to demand the magnet. Bob is more than happy to oblige...throwing the magnet at Megabyte's head, putting him in the state Dot was!
  • Chekhov's Gunman: The episode introduces Megabyte's pet Null, Nibbles, in the opening scene. He's a very incidental character for most of the show's run, but Season 4 will reveal his true identity, his connection to the main characters, and how he is directly responsible for the status quo.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: When Dot hears her condition can be cured with some Slow Food from Al’s Diner, she tries to say something about it only for her to be too glitchy to understand and Bob insisting she rest while he go gets her the food. When she turns out to be just fine, she reveals what she was trying to say is that she’s good business partners with Al’s so she can simply order slow food with rush delivery and save a bunch of hassle.
  • Dem Bones: A skeleton warrior game sprite.
  • Damsel in Distress: Played with; Dot becomes endangered from magnetization leading Bob on a quest to Al's for the cure. When the game drops, Bob assumes Dot has rebooted into the role of the damsel, but when he gets to the tower, he finds it's Enzo, and Dot is just fine, having ordered some slow-food via vid-screen.
  • Dragged into Drag: Enzo hoped to reboot into a knight like Bob, only to be mortified to end up as "a damsel in this dress."
  • Gilligan Cut: When Hack and Slash are racing to get into a game;
Hack and Slash: We are going to make it! We are going to make it!
    (Cut to Megabyte watching)
Megabyte: They're not going to make it. (Winces when the robots crash into the game wall)
  • The Glomp: Enzo again does this to Bob, upon him entering the diner. Dot points out this is a bad look for business.
  • Hope Spot:
    • After getting the food, Bob gets Hack and Slash out of Al's and beats it back to Dot's. Then a gamecube drops.
    • Played for laughs when Hack and Slash resume chasing Bob before the gamecube hits. They're certain they're just barely going to make it into the game, chanting that all the way. As Megabyte expected, though, they crash into the landed cube instead.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Phong insisted on Bob going through the trouble of beating him at his favorite game before giving him the solution to the problem. After everything is fully explained to Bob, Phong yells at him to get moving and says time is of the essence.
  • Mighty Roar: Megabyte when trying to take the magnet back from Bob. He makes an even louder one, as Bob escapes the Tor.
  • Mun Danger: In the real world, magnets are harmless to people. Since Mainframe is a world inside a computer, magnets are treated as incredibly dangerous. Megabyte plans on using it as a weapon, Bob takes it from him for this reason (shielding it as though it was radioactive) and it slowly kills Dot when she accidentally touches it.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Enzo's reaction to Dot getting hit with the magnet.
  • Near-Miss Groin Attack: Bob jumped out of the way before the skeleton warrior can drop its sword between Bob's legs.
  • Oh, Crap!: The gate shuts on Bob, realizing he has to fight the skeleton warrior.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: Part of the game involves the knights riding fire-breathing dragons. For his dragon, Bob finds that Al's waiter is operating the flight controls, while Al himself is handling the fire blasts.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Dot tries to tell Bob how to get the slow food fast, but in her addled state, it just sounds like malfunctioning gibberish.
  • Skewed Priorities: As before, Phong won't provide any information or advice, until Bob beats him at his favorite game. Due to Dot's condition, Bob is quite tweaked by this and barely indulges the game.
  • Take a Number: Bob is told to wait his turn to order, so he takes a number. He gets 1000000000000, but he doesn't think that's too bad, until the waiter says they're now serving 3. Megabyte's goons threatening the place gives Bob a bargaining chip to skip the line.
  • Throwing Your Sword Always Works: The User knight seems unstoppable until Bob throws his broken sword and hits the icon on his chest.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Enzo tries out Glitch, ending up with a jackhammer that shakes up the diner. Bob is so distracted dealing with that that he doesn't notice the container housing the magnet is about to fall off the bar onto the floor. When it does, it bursts open right in front of Dot, leading to her getting hit with the magnet.
