Recap / Power Rangers S.P.D. S1E2 Beginnings Part 2

Go To

As the B-Squad takes on the army of Krybots, Jack feels guilt for abandoning them and rushes back to help, with Z reluctantly following him knowing it may get them arrested. They proceed to morph for the first time; Syd is pleased she became the Pink Ranger, but Sky is disappointed when he finds out he ended up as Blue. They continue the fight, and just before they're about to be defeated, Z and Jack come swinging in on a rope and handle, kicking and putting the Bluehead out of commission. The B-Squad use their Power Sabres and blasters to finish off the remaining Krybots, and Bluehead retreats.

Bridge and Syd thank Z and Jack for their help, but Sky attempts to arrest them before Cruger arrives to do it in his stead. In their holding cell, Cruger explains what SPD is and does, and, admiring their potential, offers them the chance to join. Z doesn't hesitate, and Cruger informs the B-Squad of her decision and warns them to treat her well. Gruumm crumples the Bluehead for failing to retrieve the device, and sends a replacement to finish what it started.

Jack attempts to escape his cell, but R.I.C., SPD's robotic dog helper, catches him red-handed and blasts the window closed. Z brings Jack dinner and tells him of her lack of regret joining SPD, still wishing for him to do the same. Sky tries to convince Cruger he made a mistake making him the Blue Ranger; Cruger insists otherwise. He informs the rangers of the Krybots' and Blueheads' nature, then sends them to clean up a robot part mess that A-Squad made in their last fight. Bridge uses his aura powers and detects that Krybots were there, which he then deducts as meaning they were looking for something. Z tells her teammates of the device the alien gave her.

Jack smells smoke and uses R.I.C. to escape from his cell, then sprays foam on the source - Boom wearing and testing Kat's new fireproof suit. Boom introduces himself and explains part of his backstory - he flunked out of the SPD academy after three days, and afterwards Cruger appointed him to his position. He tells Jack how coveted Ranger positions can be. The B-Squad finds the device, then Bridge suggests investigating it further - something that Z says is not forbidden according to the handbook, which she studied very quickly. She leads them to Piggy, an old alien contact of hers that after some bribing, tells the team that the device is a one-of-a-kind Proton Accelerator. The new Bluehead arrives to attempt to steal it, and the Rangers morph to take him on.

They quickly realize what they're up against while Piggy takes the old sandwich Z offered her to get away. Sky requests backup and is told by Cruger it can't be given, but Jack watches the situation unfold and rushes to help knowing Z is in the fray. The Rangers pull out their Sabres, only for the Bluehead to summon more Krybots. Just when they seem to be on their last legs, Jack arrives and morphs into the Red Ranger. Sky is disappointed to see it, but before he can keep complaining the Bluehead saddles Jack with more Krybots. He unleashes his exclusive Delta Blaster to mow them down, and continues his streak even as Bluehead turns its attention to him. He combines his blasters into combo mode to finish off the Bluehead. But the Bluehead has another trick up its sleeve - a growth potion which allows him to transform into a gigantic monster, which decimates the rangers with a single blast. But thankfully, Cruger has them evacuate and sends in A-Squad to take their place, using their Megazord to do so. It almost effortlessly triumphs.

Unfortunately, Gruumm obtains the Proton Accelerator via Piggy's delivery. He uses it to enter the wormhole and continue his route towards Earth. Cruger congratulates the full team of Rangers on their victory, but sternly tells them off for allowing Gruumm to get what he wanted. He then makes Z and Jack clean the base's windows as punishment for their crimes, but they make the most of it. Gruumm warns them to laugh while they can, as his invasion looms over the horizon.

Tropes

  • The Bad Guy Wins: Grumm gets his hands on the proton accelerator he was after.
  • Big Damn Heroes: The A-Squad, which uses their Megazord to take on the Bluebot after it grows.
  • Conscience Makes You Go Back: Jack, feeling guilt for abandoning the B-Squad to be overwhelmed, goes back to help them. Z reluctantly follows suit.
  • I Resemble That Remark!: Syd says that Bridge's questions tend to be long and drawn out. Bridge asks if that's really true.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Z taking the Proton Accelerator to Piggy is what allows Gruumm to get his hands on it and arrive at Earth.
  • Refusal of the Call: Jack was a much harder sell than Z.
  • Rookie Red Ranger: To Sky's frustration. Justified, as Sky, who was first in line to be leader, failed a Secret Test of Character, and Doggy quickly realized that had he been made leader, he would've gone on an ego trip.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: At the end of episode, after Jack and Z join SPD and become Power Rangers, while Cruger is pleased with them, they still have to make up for stealing, so Cruger makes them clean every window of the Delta Base.
  • You Have Failed Me: Gruumm reduces the Bluehead that failed him to an empty suit.
