Recap / Power Rangers Mystic Force S1E30 The Return

Go To

Matoombo, a benevolent member of the Ten Terrors, decides to go against the Master's words and befriends the Ranger. In order to bring an end to the battle, the Mystic Force must bring Matoombo to an eternal rest within the Lake of Lament

Tropes:

  • All-Loving Hero: The Rangers say they always win because of their courage and ability to put others before themselves.
Itassis: And why would you do that?
Nick: Because... because you just do.
  • As You Know: The episode begins with a recap of pretty much everything that's happened up until this point, spoken to the Rangers by Toby. Justified, since it's him trying to make sense of everything after he learned last episode that his employees were Rangers the whole time, and the Rangers are even impressed that he got everything right.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Leanbow shows up in time to protect the Rangers from Gekkor and even morphs into the Wolf Warrior.
  • Continuity Nod: Toby initially recognizes Phineas as Xander's uncle from the old country.
  • Double-Meaning Title: The episode’s name is not just signifying the return of Leanbow, but also the Master.
  • Downer Ending: As the Rangers celebrate their seeming victory and Leanbow's return, Matoombo is killed by Sculpin and his body is overcome by the Master who fully resurrects. The Master vows to kill the Rangers one by one and bring about the end of the world.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good:
    • While surveying the city, Matoombo just can't understand why humans keep resisting his kind. He begins to wonder if their magic is stronger than he had been told. He's also confused why a child he saved gave him a gift (a ball) as thanks. As he starts to understand good, he ends up suffering a crisis of faith and tries to switch sides.
    • Itassis approaches this from a more logical perspective, simply asking how the Rangers keep beating them, despite being significantly less powerful. The Rangers say it's because of their courage and selflessness. When Itassis asks why they do it, Nick gives her the simple answer she was looking for: they just do it.
  • Friend to All Children: Matoombo saves a child from getting hit by a car.
  • Hope Spot: Just as Matoombo finds the Lake of Lament and prepares to spend the rest of eternity there, thus preventing the Master from being reborn, Sculpin ambushes and kills him, allowing the Master to possess Matoombo's body.
  • I Gave My Word: Matoombo promises to leave the Rangers and the city be so long as they leave him alone.
  • Odd Friendship: Vida forms one with Matoombo after witnessing his kinder side.
  • Vampire Vords: Toby imitates this while mentioning Necrolai as "Queen of the Vampires"
  • Token Good Teammate:
    • Vida observes that Matoombo isn't very evil, after all, and actually has a heart unlike most of the Terrors, befriending him.
    • Itassis offers to help the Rangers in exchange for the right answer to her question. She is satisfied and makes good on her promise.
  • Tempting Fate: As Matoombo prepares to enter the lake, he states the master will never be reborn or start his reign of terror, before Sculpin ambushes him, telling Matoombo that it will happen.
  • Trailers Always Spoil: The promo for this episode reveals Leanbow's return and becoming the Wolf Warrior.
