Magic is the very first episode of Popee the Performer. It aired on January 3, 2000.Popee does his very first trick of the series and does the Saw a Woman in Half trick. All is good, until Popee has to put Kedamono together again.
This episode provides examples of:
- A Taste of Their Own Medicine: After catching Popee, Kedamono saws him into little pieces to show that sawing him in half was not a good idea. The Bad Guy Wins via disobeying the laws of.. everything, though.
- The Bad Guy Wins: After being cut into pieces by Kedamono, each piece turns into an individual Popee and they chase Kedamono down, eventually surrounding and torturing him.
- Chase Scene: Realizing he put Kedamono together wrong, he freaks out and runs away, but is eventually caught. Kedamono gets his chase scene when Popee comes back in clones.
- Dissonant Laughter: While running away from Kedamono, Popee stops being afraid and breaks down with laughter.
- Early-Installment Weirdness: Unlike in later episodes, Kedamono retaliates against Popee and not out of self-defense.
- Everybody Do the Endless Loop: The episode ends with all the Popee clones surrounding Kedamono and dancing, seemingly forever, torturing Kedamono.
- Face Framed in Shadow: While Popee is sawing Kedamono in half, a close-up shot shows Popee’s face completely shrouded in shadows.
- Nightmare Face: Yep, even the first episode had nightmare faces. When Kedamono catches Popee, his mask turns into an Eldritch Abomination face. Not helped that it looks like it set the Zirkus on fire just for that shot.
- Saw a Woman in Half: The episode revolves around this.
- Soundtrack Dissonance: While the Popees chase and torture Kedamono, happy-go-lucky circus music is playing in the background.
- Visual Innuendo: When Popee puts Kedamono back together, he puts his bottom half the wrong way, so now Kedamono's tail is in front. Now Kedamono looks like he’s constantly erect.
