Recap / Pokemon S 25 E 40 In The Palms Of Our Hands

Go To

The Chasers for Project Mew have finally found Mew's hiding place, but it seems that Kyogre and Groudon have found them! As both parties fight for survival, Goh makes a shocking discovery about Mew, and that the Mythical Pokémon is not quite what it seemed.

This episode contains the following tropes:

  • Adaptational Badass: Mew is strongly implied to be linked to the creation of the universe, a role that's typically associated with Arceus.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: As Goh, Gary, and Horace make their final departure, they all shout out "The future's in the palm of our hands!"
  • Broken Pedestal: Goh seems disappointed when Mew starts attacking them for play, but he pushes through it and gets it to stop.
  • Exact Words: As Goh declares his "The future's in the palm of my hand!" catchphrase, Mew appears in the palm of his hand, allowing him to "catch it" for a moment.
  • Idiot Ball: Somehow, none of the Chasers besides Goh realize Mew is simply playing around, even though its disposition should have made it obvious.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Mew is flabbergasted when it sees that its playing injured every other Pokémon around it and uses its powers to heal them.
  • New Powers as the Plot Demands: Mew in this episode is essentially portrayed as a Physical God, seemingly immortal and so powerful it can do anything the plot requires, such as splitting into two different Pokémon at the same time or effortlessly No-Selling a full group attack from the Chasers.
  • Obliviously Evil: Mew thinks that throwing out attacks at everyone is its way of playing, unaware that it's hurting all the other Pokémon in the process.
  • The Power of Friendship: Goh is able to get Mew to stop attacking them by giving a sincere thanks for starting him on his journey, which stops Mew dead in its tracks and gets it to realize that it's been hurting the other Pokémon.
  • Scissors Cuts Rock: Groudon, a Ground type, utterly demolishes Quillon's Weavile despite Ice moves being super effective. It's later Justified when it's revealed it was really Mew. Even still, it's Played Straight when the Psychic type utterly annihilates all of Quillon's other Dark types, including Honchkrow and Urshifu.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Grookey learns to use Wood Hammer.
  • The Worf Effect: All of Goh, Danika, Quillon, Horace, and Gary's Pokémon are completely powerless against Mew, who uses ultra-powerful moves they can't deflect, dodge, or even push back. Not even Horace's Virizion, nor either Urshifu, can stand against Mew without falling.
