Recap / Penny Dreadful S 3 E 1 The Day Tennyson Died

Go To

As London grieves the death of "the last great poet" Alfred, Lord Tennyson, all the characters are scattered around the world. A distraught Vanessa fights a severe depression with the help of an alienist; Frankenstein seeks revenge with the aid of Dr. Henry Jekyll; Sir Malcolm meets a mysterious man in Zanzibar; Ethan Chandler is escorted home to his father, with Hecate in tow; and the Creature - stranded in the Arctic - sets off on a journey after his past memories begin to return. A new threat hangs over London in the form of Count Dracula.

Tropes:

  • Big Bad: In the final scene, Dracula seems to be setting himself up as this.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Kaetenay pops up just in time to rescue Malcolm.
  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: Jekyll proposes to Victor that instead of killing Lilly, they should save her from the evil that has consumed her. Then he turns around and talks about "domesticating her" and promises to have her "purring like a kitten" in Victor's lap.
  • Character Tic: Vanessa has developed a nasty habit of scratching her right hand when nervous. Doctor Seward calls her on it.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: Doctor Sweet is this in a charming way, when he starts a conversation with Vanessa, a complete stranger, about the deadliness of scorpions, then goes off on a tangent about other fascinating animals.
  • Creepy Child: The "anaemic" ribbon-boy already seems a little off before we find out he's one of Dracula's underlings.
  • Creepy Souvenir: Kaetenay keeps the scalps of the people he kills, then snarks about it being an old tradition.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Dr. Seward has absolutely no interest in pleasantries or friendship, yet is still a brilliant psychologist in a time when the science was in its infancy.
  • Flash Back Echo: The Creature, for the first time ever, remembers his son from a past life as he sings a song to comfort a dying young boy.
  • Honey Trap: An African prostitute tries to pull this on Malcolm, but when he declines she tries to have her cronies rob and murder him.
  • Identical Ancestor: Dr. Seward's family is descended from the Claytons, and she is played by Patti LuPone - the same actress as ancient Joan Clayton the Cut-Wife.
  • Mad Scientist: This episode introduces Dr. Henry Jekyll, one of the most famous mad scientists in modern literature.
  • Mercy Kill: The Creature comforts a dying young boy amongst the few survivors of the ill-fated voyage, and then snaps his neck before leaving to return to England.
  • Mythology Gag: Frankenstein introduces his laboratory to Jekyll as "the House of Pain". Initially the producers had intended for Dr. Moreau to play a part in Season 3, but couldn't get the rights to use him.
  • Nightmare Fuel Station Attendant: Jekyll gives off quite an eerie vibe, especially when he tries to 'reassure' Victor that they can save Lilly by basically lobotomizing and enslaving her.
  • No Party Like a Donner Party: The Creature's ship is revealed stuck in the Arctic ice, with the surviving half-frozen sailors arguing about eating the dead passengers.
  • Pintsized Powerhouse: Dr. Sweet is thrilled at Vanessa's interest in the "Death Stalker" Scorpion, and explains to her that their small, albino appearance usually make most visitors dismiss them in favor of the larger species.
  • Putting the Band Back Together: A whole bunch of new characters step in to bring the main characters back into the fight against evil.
  • Race Lift: Jekyll in the original novella was white, while this version of the character is half English and half Indian.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: The Creature, once his flashback provides motivation, quickly resolves the sailors' moral dilemma by carrying out a Mercy Kill and then leaves them to their fate. He, at least, doesn't have to worry about freezing or starving to death, but lacks any way to rescue them, and doesn't want to watch them die.
  • Sherlock Scan: Dr. Seward is able to understand all of Vanessa's problems and psychological difficulties based entirely on her mannerisms and a brief conversation.
  • The Faceless: Dracula is only heard at the end of the episode, after spending the previous two seasons as The Ghost.
  • The Renfield: We meet the trope namer in fact, shortly before he is made a thrall of Dracula.
  • Walking the Earth: This is apparently John Clare's plan to get back to England, as he starts walking there from Antarctica.
