Recap / Penny Dreadful S 2 E 10 And They Were Enemies

Go To

Vanessa converses with the doll and learns that she's speaking with the Devil, who informs her that he cannot take her soul but must be voluntarily given it. Vanessa ultimately resists the temptations and defeats it. Hecate unleashes a transformed Ethan into the room and he kills Evelyn, releasing Victor and Malcolm from their hallucinations. Hecate later sets the house on fire after all the heroes have left.

John Clare is visited by the Putneys in his cage, where they tell him they will change their exhibits from crime scenes to exhibiting "freaks" like he. He immediately breaks free from the cage and brutally kills them both. Immediately after, Lavinia arrives, looking for her parents and asks aloud if Clare's asleep; believing that he is, she calls him a grotesque animal. John Clare leaves to let her find her parents' corpses.

Victor goes to look for Lily in Dorian's home where she reveals that she's been aware all along that she was created by him as well as that both Lily and Dorian are immortal. Lily and Dorian decide to let Victor live with the knowledge of the genocidal monster that he's created.

Back at Malcolm's home, Malcolm ruefully tells Vanessa that he will be taking Sembene's body back to Africa for burial. Vanessa, now knowing that Ethan's a werewolf and because she fears that every action she's taken away from the darkness has led her further into it, asks Ethan to stay with her. However, he turns himself over to Inspector Rusk, who informs Ethan that he's to be extradited back to America.

A despondent Vanessa visits John Clare, who has returned to the underground hospital. He informs her that he's given up on the hope of being able to integrate with humanity but offers to take her with him. She refuses because she believes that everyone close to her becomes cursed, and she doesn't want him to suffer.

Vanessa, now alone, closes the lights in Sir Malcolm's home as Ethan's note is read in a voice over. He thanks her for her affection and understanding, and tells her that while her road is difficult, his is doomed, so they walk alone. However, she takes her cross and burns it, believing herself to be beyond redemption.

Tropes:

  • Asshole Victim: The Putneys.
  • Berserk Button: The Putneys discover that being called a freak is John Clare's.
  • Bittersweet Ending/Downer Ending: Evelyn and her coven are defeated. However, Hecate has escaped, Sembene is dead, Lily is now decidedly evil, which leads Victor to retreat into drugs, John Clare has abandoned any idea of integrating with humanity and travels to the arctic, Ethan is extradited to America, and Vanessa burns her cross as she believes herself to be irredeemable.
  • Breaking the Fellowship: Ethan is extradited back to America, Malcolm is sailing to Africa to bury Sembene, and Clare is sailing to some other distant corner of the world. Vanessa and Frankenstein alone are left in London, but Vanessa is convinced she's damned and Victor has just given himself a larger-than-normal dose of morphine.
  • Call-Back: Lily taunts Victor about taking his virginity, calling him clumsy and all hands.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Literally — Lyle uses the gun Ethan gave him last episode to kill the witch menacing him.
  • Continuity Nod: Hecate sings "The Unquiet Grave" as she sets Evelyn's house on fire.
  • Cruel Mercy:
    • John Clare kills the Putneys after he escapes from his cell, leaving Lavinia to discover her parents' corpses.
    • Lily and Dorian choose to let Victor survive after he discovers that they're immortal so that he can live with the knowledge of the monster he created.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: Vanessa takes on Satan himself in a magic duel and wins.
  • The Final Temptation: The devil tempts Vanessa with a happy and ordinary life with Ethan (and two children). She rejects him.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Vanessa discovers that Ethan's a werewolf.
    • Victor discovers that Lily and Dorian are immortal, and that Lily is a genocidal monster.
  • Kick the Dog: Lavinia cruelly taunts John Clare when she believes that he's asleep; this only encourages him to let her live so she can discover her parents' corpses:
Are you sleeping Mr. Clare? You're probably handsome in your dreams. I bet you wish you could sleep every second. No such luck, you grotesque animal.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: The Putneys planned to exploit John Clare by keeping him in a cell for a private freakshow and deride and mock him in the process. He promptly busts out of his cell, snaps Mrs. Putney's neck like a twig, before grabbing her husband and smashing his skull against the wall.
  • Off with His Head!: Ethan in werewolf form slashes through Evelyn's neck with his claws, half-decapitating her, and gravity does the rest.
  • Oh, Crap!: The Putneys have just enough time for this before John Clare busts out of his cell and kills them both.
    • Victor also has this reaction when he shoots both Lily and Dorian and his bullets have no effect.
    • This is also Ethan's reaction when he learns that he is being extradited back to America.
  • Killed Off for Real: Evelyn Poole.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Vanessa to the devil:
    "Beloved, know your master."
    • Lyle, to the witch he kills:
"Never underestimate the power of a queen with lovely hair, dear."
  • Rapid Aging: Evelyn becomes subject to this after Vanessa defeats the devil.
  • Scream Discretion Shot: As John Clare walks away from the Putneys', Lavinia can be heard screaming.
  • The Starscream: Hecate finally lives up to this, unleashing Ethan in werewolf form to kill her mother.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Evelyn is reduced to shrieking in wordless rage and trying to kill Vanessa when she rejects Satan's offer and he strips Evelyn of her youth in punishment.
  • We Can Rule Together: Hecate offers this to Ethan.
  • Why Don't You Just Shoot Him?: If that witch had just killed Lyle instead of spending ten minutes pinning him to a wall and snarling at him...
