Recap / Peeking Through The Fourth Wall Episode 26

Go To

Lincoln has brought along Lori, Lynn, Lisa, and, for the first time, Clyde (who is wearing blinders to prevent him from seeing Lori). They are going to be reading Class Night.

The fanfic begins with Lincoln, Clyde, Rusty, Liam, and Zach by their lockers, excited for summer and for "class night", which Lincoln (the real one) defines as "like prom night, but lamer". Then, it turns out that all of them have dates except Lincoln. The real Lincoln doubts this as likely, and Clyde calls him a girl magnet, piquing the curiosity of the sisters.

Then, it's revealed that fanfic Lincoln has a crush on a girl but is too nervous to ask her out. Zach condescendingly says, "Yeah, and the grass is green and the sky is blue", to which Liam says that it's not technically true, which, as the real Lincoln points out, is odd, since Liam doesn't know squat about science. Fanfic Zach tells Lincoln that feeling shy around his crushes is normal, but he needs to get over his jitters, so Lincoln decides to ask his crush out that day.

Fanfic Lincoln then does a test but has trouble and worries that means his crush won't like him. After the test, he walks over to Stella (despite the real Lincoln pointing out that he knows that no means no) and is about to ask her out but she has to take the bus. Lisa snidely points out that Lincoln, the real one at least, has a cell phone.

Later, the fanfic versions of Lincoln and Clyde are at the movies buying snacks and drinks (but Lynn would rather break the rules and bring her own snacks and drinks). Fanfic Clyde convinces Lincoln to text Stella, and he nervously does. After the movie, fanfic Lori texts Lincoln, inviting him to Burpin' Burger.

There, fanfic Stella is revealed to already have a date, which makes Lincoln grumpy. He's still in a sulk when helping with the dishes after dinner that night, even when Lynn Sr. reveals that they're going to the beach tomorrow. Fanfic Lola jumps on Lincoln's stomach and the real Lincoln reveals that Lola does indeed do that sometimes, in a game she calls "Trampoline".

That night, the older sisters are concerned about fanfic Lincoln, and Lori goes to talk to him and he tells her he got rejected. The real Lori points out that dating isn't a big deal in fifth grade, then adds that girls mature faster than boys... even though, according to Lincoln, she sang, "Boys go to Jupiter to get more stupider" until high school, but she claims she sang it "ironically". Fanfic Lincoln goes to sleep.

The next day, at the beach, fanfic Lincoln is doing a "Q&A" and explains it to Leni. Paige asks if he's going to class night, and the next day at school, he asks her out, but she also has a date, as do Girl Jordan, Cristina, and four more girls, so he decides not to go. Fanfic Clyde says he has to and the real Lynn tries to say that's not true, but she feels a bit sad about not having gone to class night in elementary school.

Fanfic Lori convinces him that class night will be fun, so he phones up Ronnie Anne. Much to his excitement, she says yes. The sisters tease Lincoln for fanfic Lincoln's excitement, and the real Lincoln points out that his fanfic counterpart is only excited to not be alone. Lisa asks why he can't bring a boy, but Lincoln says that it'd just be weird and refuses to argue with someone who sleeps with a nightlight.

Fanfic Lincoln gets teased as well, and then he goes to the class night, where Rusty has rented a limo. Then, the story abruptly ends.

The siblings and Clyde are a bit bemused, but reckon they haven't missed much. Lynn reveals that the middle school dance is coming up but she's going stag because boys find her intimidating. She shows her bare stomach, which causes Clyde to start crushing on her.

This episode provides examples of

  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul: Stella and Rusty are explicitly platonic friends. Fanfic Stella and Rusty are implied to be dating.
  • Adaptational Wealth: Fanfic Rusty's parents are apparently richer than the real Rusty's, since he rented a limo for Class Night.
  • Big "YES!": Fanfic Lincoln says, "YESSSSS!" when Ronnie Anne accepts his invitation.
  • Book Dumb: Liam isn't stupid, but this episode reveals that he's not very book-smart: he doesn't believe in evolution and used to believe, among other things, that the moon was a star and bats were bugs.
  • Comfort Food: Invoked by fanfic Lincoln who says that he should check if Stella replied at Burpin' Burger, so if she rejects him, he can "eat his feelings away".
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Lincoln remembers that Stella already told him she wasn't interested (in "Be Stella My Heart").
    • Lincoln and Clyde remember Paige, from "L is for Love" and Cristina from "Making the Case".
  • Copycat Mockery: When Clyde says, "But Lynn, isn't that against theatre policy?!", she teasingly mimics him.
  • Girls Have Cooties: Lori says that when boys are in fifth grade, they're just figuring out that girls don't have cooties, but girls have already matured. Then, Lincoln says that she sang, "Boys go to Jupiter to get more stupider" until high school.
  • Last-Second Word Swap: When Lynn offers Clyde a piggyback, he says, "I'd lo— I mean like to."
  • Mistaken for Gay: Defied by Lincoln, who refuses to dance with a boy because that'd be weird.
  • Out of Character:
    • Liam doesn't know anything whatsoever about physics but fanfic Liam knows that colours are an illusion.
    • Fanfic Lynn Sr. is strangely apathetic; when Lincoln is moody, Lynn Sr. can't be bothered to either discipline or console him.
  • Primal Fear: Discussed when Lisa says that it is human nature to be afraid of the dark.
  • Rapid-Fire "Yes!": Fanfic Lincoln, when Ronnie Anne accepts his invitation, says, "Yes, yes, yes, yes, YES!".
  • What Are Records?: Lincoln doesn't know what DVD and Blu-Ray are.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: This episode reveals Lisa to be afraid of the dark.
