A Pikachu wakes up in an unfamiliar universe inhabited by humans, not remembering who he is, where he is, what the human world is about or why he even ended up there.
(More than that, the real question I should be asking though is ... what are these tropes?!)
- Amnesiac Hero: The first scene of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: The Unexpected Arrival shows an unconscious Pikachu (later revealed to be Kroohu) waking up in a completely different universe with little to no memory of who he is. Cue the series' first words:Kroohu: (Where am I?) (Who am I?) (Why does the word "Snivy" keep ringing in my head so much?) (More than that, the real question I should be asking though is... WHAT IS THIS PLACE?!)
- Apocalypse Wow: Kroohu shouts "WHAT IS THIS PLACE?!" very loudly while his loud voice shakes the Earth. Justified given how shocked Kroohu was when he was puzzled about how he ended up in the human world.
- Does This Remind You of Anything?: In the bedroom Kroohu is sleeping in, it contains red, green, yellow and blue colours with multiple meanings. These colours resemble the first four Pokémon games, Red, Green, Blue and Yellow and the first three Pokémon starter types; Grass, Fire and Water.
- Flashback Echo: When it felt like Kroohu was rendered unable to remember anything, he suddenly remembers another Pokémon Snivy, nicknamed Zieix, who is his younger brother.
- Hidden in Plain Sight: Racky allows Kroohu (who is a Pikachu) to live with him in his house to avoid having to draw attention to himself in the public eye and not risk getting Pikachu getting taken away by the police officers.
- Identity Amnesia: An unconscious Pikachu, nicknamed Kroohu, wakes up in the human world with no memory of who he is, where he is or what the world as mentioned earlier is about.
- Running Over the Plot: A human who was driving a black car (later revealed to be Blacky Cruise) accidentally runs Pikachu over in the middle of an open road, thus beginning the plot of the series.
- Talking Animal: Lampshaded in this exchange between the Pikachu, nicknamed Kroohu and Racky:Racky: You can talk?!
Kroohu: Well, yeah. I can talk! - Title Drop: Subverted by Racky when he mentions how Kroohu's arrival was an unexpected one.Kroohu: Is my arrival really that unexpected for everybody?
Racky: More than an unexpected arrival... Pokémon don't even exist in this world.
