Tropes for the episode:
- Big Brother Instinct: Ryan tries to attack Schillinger as soon as he sees him taunting Cyril. He also attempts to fix the fights to keep him safe.
- Big Brother Bully: On the other hand, the only reason Ryan has to fix the fights is that he forced Cyril into the boxing competition when he didn't want to participate.
- Call-Back: Ryan mentions Beecher biting of the tip of Robson's penis.
- Disproportionate Retribution: Carlo tries to attack Cudney for telling him to pray.
- Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Coyle thought Augustus would respect him more for his murders of an innocent family.
- Even Evil Has Standards:
- Said convinces Schillinger, Guerra and Nappa to protect Augustus from from Coyle's friends by appealing to their family values, and it works.
- Ryan is upset by Coyle's murders being shown on tv for everyone to see.
- Even Evil Has Loved Ones:
- Nappa takes Coyle's killings more personally than the other leaders, as he was friendly with the family on the outside.
- Nappa keeps a picture drawn for him by his grandson Tommy.
- Jerkass: Guerra insults Ryan without provocation.
- Kick the Dog: Schillinger's needless taunting of Richie and Cyril.
- "Not So Different" Remark: Aunt Brenda implies she doesn't think Ryan is any better any his father.
- Pragmatic Villainy: Devlin helps Dr. Nathan keep her job to make himself look compassionate to the voters.
- Pay Evil unto Evil: Nappa has Coyle killed to avenge the innocent family he murdered.
- Reasonable Authority Figure: Murphy lets Ryan off with a warning as he can sympathise with his anger over his brother's rape but makes it clear he will punish Ryan for any further infractions.
- Rejected Apology: McManus refuses to forgive Howell for assaulting him.
- Villainous Friendship: Subverted. Shirley and Vern seem to get on but she has no problem suggesting a method for Richie to get him sent to Death Row.
