Tropes for the episode:

  • Blackmail: McManus tries to leverage Said's desire to be allowed to fast to make him drop the lawsuit as a means of protecting Diane.

  • Bystander Syndrome: Rebadow does nothing to stand up for Busmalis against Vern.

  • Driven to Suicide: Attempted by Alvarez at the end of the episode.

  • For the Evulz: Coyle tells Augustus about how he once murdered an innocent family for fun.

  • Falsely Reformed Villain: Turns out Adebisi's change of heart was a ploy so he could infect Nappa with aids.

  • Jerkass:

    • Vern's father Heinrick who had previously thrown his two grandchildren out on the street refuses to put any money towards Andrew's court case.

    • Garvey threatens to Fire Dr. Nathan the instant she disagrees with him.

  • Kick the Dog:
    • Robson mocking Cyril over his rape.

    • We find out that Schillinger spits in Busmalis's food daily.

  • Lack of Empathy:

    • Coyle shows no remorse for his crimes and finds the fact he killed a family who never did anything to him highly amusing.

    • Kenny is impressed by Coyle's murder of a family

    • Garvey is disturbingly indifferent to the idea of Alvarez killing himself.

    • So is Glynn, though this is more understandable in this case due to the rivalry between the men and Alvarez's refusal to tell Glynn who raped his daughter.

    • Howell initially shows empathy about Diane's mother's death, but discards it in favor of irrational jealousy when McManus comforts Diane with a hug and time off to grieve.

  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished:

    • McManus's innocent attempt to comfort Diane over her mother's death leads to a jealous Howell attacking him.

    • Mukada goes to deliver Alvarez some food and ends up almost being attacked.

  • Old Friend: McManus brings Murphy in precisely because they've known each other for a long time and knows he can trust him which is more than can be said for the other CO's

  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Said gives Augustus good advice about how to handle the situation With Coyle.

  • To Be Lawful or Good: Hill wants justice for Coyle's victims but fears he'll be killed if he snitches on a fellow inmate. He ultimately decides to snitch on Coyle anyway.

  • Voice of Reason: Khan prevents a confrontation between Said and Arif.

  • Villainous Friendship: Kenny genuinely likes Coyle, being very angered by his transfer out of the kitchen and later his arrest.

  • Worthy Opponent: Glynn shows respect for Augustus acting out of honor when it goes against his own self-interest
