This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • A Day in the Spotlight: Black Cindy's back story is revealed.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Wanda Bell and Scott O'Neil share a big kiss upon reconciling.
  • Bitch Slap: Polly slaps Larry across the face for kissing her the day before.
  • Cruel Mercy: Senile Jimmy is given a "compassionate release" — which means she is kicked out of the prison and dropped at the next bus stop, to fend for herself in a world she has no chance of understanding or living in.
  • Downer Ending: The women watch, heartbroken, as Jimmy is carted away, screaming for Roberta.
  • Family Relationship Switcheroo: Cindy's daughter is being raised by Cindy's mother and thinks she's Cindy's little sister.
  • Guy on Guy Is Hot: Flaca asks Bennett for a magazine with just guys in it, saying that it's hot.
  • Incompatible Orientation: Fig is in a loveless marriage with her husband who is gay.
  • MacGyvering: Inmates make cigarette lighters out of batteries and gum wrappers.
  • Overreacting Airport Security: Cindy's job before she went to prison. In addition to overreacting, she fulfills all the worst stereotypes of TSA employees, including stealing valuables out of inspected luggage, using a golf cart to commit drive-by shoplifting of airport convenience stores, and feeling up attractive men during pat-downs.
  • Put on a Bus: Jimmy, literally. Due to her worsening condition, Jimmy is given "compassionate release." They take her, wailing to "Roberta" (Piper) that she doesn't want to go, and drop her off at the bus station.
  • Shout-Out: To Cruela De Vil and Holly Golightly.
  • Sophisticated as Hell: Polly chews out Larry before cutting to the chase. "What the hell am I saying? Just fuck me."
  • Story Arc: Vee begins to establish her business.
  • Title Drop: Flaca complains about the use of the font in Daya's comic strip; her distaste for it even extends to using it in its intended context.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Polly chews out Larry for kissing her knowing she is a married woman and he's with Piper. Then she asks him to sleep with her.
