The Straw Hats Seperation Serial has the following tropes:

  • Adaptation Expansion: The anime builds on the cover stories for full episodes.
    • Also the Shokugeki no Sanji one-shot by the authoring team of Food Wars!, Yuto Tsukuda and Shun Saeki, which is basically Sanji's misadventures in Kamabakka Island told in their style, Food Porn included.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: We join Perona to discover Kuma granted her request and sent her away to her ideal vacation spot, only for him to only send her to the location, when her ideal vacation would have had servants and animals, not just be a spooky castle completely devoid of anything besides her.
  • Big Eater: Usopp during his time on an island full of food. So much so he quickly grows obsessed with eating, and becomes obese.
  • Floating Continent: Where Nami ends up.
  • Going Native: Sanji is forced to do this at one point on an island full of crossdressers.
  • Irony: The cover stories usually follow secondary characters and villains from the previous arcs. Never thought you'd see a cover story featuring the main characters eh?
  • Ironic Hell: Sanji, a womanizer and a pervert, lands in an island full of crossdressers. Kuma has a very twisted sense of humor, don't you? This actually gets worse when you consider that Luffy and Zoro get to spend their time in the presence of attractive women in Boa Hancock and Perona respectively and feel nothing about it for the entire two years.
  • Out-of-Genre Experience: Robin's arc on Tequila Wolf seems to be almost out of a completely different anime. Everything looks dull and grey, and the slavers have none of the campy humor or goofiness that you saw with Duval or Impel Down. There's also no big action scenes for most of it.
