Recap / OKKO Lets Be Heroes S 3 E 5 KO Vs Fink

Go To

When Fink taunts K.O. for being a momma's boy, he grapples with newfound insecurity about it.

Tropes:

  • An Aesop: Fighting back physically out of anger in a desire to get revenge is not the right way to handle a bully. The best way to deal with it is to talk to people you trust and who care about you.
  • Bittersweet Ending: K.O. accepts Fink calling him a momma's boy by being proud that he loves his mom, and is able to defeat her with the help of Rad and Enid. But we're also shown the aftermath of Fink's defeat which implies that her actual problem with K.O. likely stems from jealousy over him having a parental figure who gives him the attention she's been longing for from Professor Venomous, who hasn't been giving it to her as of late. Also, while Shadowy Figure's attempts to make K.O. get angry fail this time, K.O. never figures out that it was actually Shadowy talking to him rather than his inner monologue.
  • Call-Back: K.O. mentions he can't call on T.K.O. for power after the events of "T.K.O. Rules". He even refers to T.K.O. being "grounded."
  • Conflict Ball:
    • Averted with Professor Venomous, as it's later revealed in “Let’s Get Shadowy” that Professor Venomous becomes tired and gets a bad mood when Shadowy Figure stops using his body, and since Shadowy Figure was in the episode, it’s understandable that Fink was easily able to agitate him, while in other episodes he's a total push over when it comes to Fink.
    • Played straight however with Darrell and Shannon. Them judging and being condescending towards Fink comes out of nowhere. With Darrell, they were shown to have started getting along after the events of “All in the Villainy”, and with Shannon, Fink allowed her to have some of the weapons in her collection in the same episode.
  • Continuity Nod: When K.O. finally defeats Fink, she crashes through Voxmore's roof and slides into Professor Venomous's office in a similar way to Darrell and Shannon back in "Sibling Rivalry." They're even there waiting to rate Fink's landing. She gets 4 and a 2 from the bots, respectively.
  • Failed a Spot Check: In spite of the fact that K.O. has met Shadowy Figure three times in the past and knows exactly what he sounds like and what kinds of things he says, he fails to recognize that his "inner monologue" sounds exactly like Shadowy Figure voice-wise, and is giving him the same type of advice Shadowy always has. Even worse in that K.O. is standing in the ditch near the pipe that leads to the glorb tree room, and so far, Shadowy has always appeared to K.O. either at this ditch or in the room itself. You'd think hearing that voice in such a familiar place would jog his memory, though it's possible K.O. is too mad about Fink to think clearly.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: It's hinted at the end that Fink's actual issue with K.O. is that his mother gives him the attention Professor Venomous is too busy to give her.
  • Hypocrite: Fink calls K.O. weak for being (emotionally) dependent on his mother, but she gets most of her power from technology and glorbs her boss provides her.
  • Insult Backfire: When Fink first calls K.O. a momma's boy, he doesn't even understand that it's an insult, literally thinking Fink is just calling him his mother's son. Her malicious and condescending tone starts getting the point across quickly, but K.O. eventually decides to just be proud that he loves his mom.
  • Lost Food Grievance: During their first confrontation, K.O. is shocked into letting Fink get away when she makes him drop the cupcake Carol made for him.
  • Momma's Boy: Fink repeatedly taunts K.O. for being one. The fact that she's so mean about it briefly makes K.O. insecure, but Enid and Rad help him see that there's nothing wrong with it at all and he shouldn't let Fink's words get to him. At the end of the episode, K.O. tells Carol he's proud to be this, and plans to continue to be one his whole life.
  • The Power of Friendship: K.O. following his "inner monologue" (Shadowy Figure)'s advice and trying to fight Turbo Fink by himself with the power of his anger doesn't work, since she's simply too strong for him in that form. But when he calls on Enid and Rad for help, they're able to talk him down from his anger and help him see that he shouldn't let Fink's words get to him or be ashamed of being a Momma's Boy, and work together with him to take her down.
  • The Power of Love: Spoofed. The heroes combine into a "Bodega Heart Formation", and literally blast Fink back to Boxmore with a heart-shaped "Love Beam". Then when Carol shows up, all three of them give her a big hug, which Enid and Rad explain as lingering emotions from the love beam.
  • Shout-Out: On arriving at the Plaza, Fink shouts "Bodegamen, come out and pla-ay!"
  • Super Gullible: K.O. readily believes that Shadowy Figure's voice is just his internal monologue. What's more, when K.O. informs his "inner monologue" that T.K.O. is grounded, Shadowy very unconvincingly states that, in that case, K.O. will win by bringing glorbs back to the sewer and leaves with an Evil Laugh, and K.O. just seems slightly weirded out by this at most.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: K.O. is muttering angrily to himself about how mean Fink is and how "she's such a...such a...". Shadowy Figure, from the shadows, finishes the sentence for him with "...such a bully?", and then this exchange happens:
    K.O.: Yeahhhh...is this...still my inner monologue?
Shadowy Figure: Ahhh...y-yes, your ol' inner monologue, hehehehehe.
  • Versus Title: From the network that brought you "Jake vs. Me-mow".
