A Valentine's Day special. The 118 are called out to the consequences of an airborne surprise marriage proposal. Athena tries to help a heart-broken woman, with unforeseen results. Abby and Buck’s first date ends in disaster.

Tropes featured in the episode:

  • Asshole Victim: Ted was a cheating douchebag, but being mutilated to death and being stuck back together with Superglue was a little too much.
  • Ax-Crazy: Melora, complete with actual axe.
  • Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs: What made Melora snap at Ted was getting chocolate diamonds, but the candy instead of the jewel.
Melora: "I like chocolate. I like Le Vian diamonds. Real diamonds, not Le Vian diamond-shaped chocolates."
  • *Click* Hello: Melora points a snub nose revolver at Athena's head when she finds Ted's body.
  • Didn't Think This Through: A man thought it would be romantic to fake a plane emergency to propose to his girlfriend. The stress she gets from both situations leads her to having a heart attack.
  • Gallows Humor: The cake at Chimney's party has rebar coming out of its head.
  • Grievous Bottley Harm: Athena knocks Melora out with a wine bottle when Sandra, one of Ted's girlfriends, bangs on the door looking for him.
  • He's Back!: Chimney is back in the 118 after his disastrous car accident that nearly killed him.
  • Instant Drama, Just Add Tracheotomy: Abby performs one on Buck after he chokes on some bread on their Valentine's dinner date.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: Melora plans to kill Ted's other girlfriend, Ashleigh, who she has trapped in the basement. She doesn't count on him having a third girlfriend coming to the house.
  • Race Against the Clock: During a highway pileup, one of the crash victims was transporting a kidney to a hospital. Athena takes the man and the organ cooler into her squad car before driving him to the hospital to make the delivery.
  • Self-Harm: Athena notices Melora has a vertical scar on her wrist. Melora covers it up and says it was from a long time ago, an old cry for help.
  • Spanner in the Works: Sandra, Ted's third girlfriend, banging on the door was all the opening Athena needed to break free from her bondage.
  • Spotting the Thread: Athena notices something's wrong when she opens the medicine cabinet in Ted's bathroom and finds several pill bottles worth of drugs. The shower also has blood on the drain.
  • Valentine's Day Episode: The episode takes place on Valentine's Day.
  • Wacky Marriage Proposal: A guy flying his girlfriend in a plane and faking engine problems so that she'll open up the manual and read the marriage proposal he wrote in it. Things then go wrong as the girlfriend collapses due to all the stress affecting her broken heart syndrome. After the boyfriend is able to land the plane and the team is able to revive the girlfriend, she still says yes to the proposal, much to Buck's shock. Although she does give the guy a good slap in the face after he puts the ring on.
    Abby: Love hurts.
  • Warts and All: While trying to get out of her duct tape bindings, Athena tells Melora the Roman origins of Valentine's Day, remembering that her daughter did a report for it at school. It started as a pagan ritual to Lupercalia, where the men stripped naked and ran down the streets beating unmarried or infertile women, believing beating them would cure their infertility, or finding the women a husband, followed by sacrificing a dog. Melora believes it's about St. Valentine, the patron saint of love. Athena tells her he's the patron saint of epileptics instead.
  • Yandere: Melora. It's not shown how she knocked Ted out, but it was enough to warrant a 911 noise complaint. She hacks him with a meat cleaver under the misguided belief that since Athena was the nicest person who ever talked to her, she can replace Ted's heart with Athena's.
