  • Ambiguous Situation: When Jacob picked up an alien's presence at the party, was it Naomi herself, or someone else?
  • Artistic License – Martial Arts: Dee's ready stance in his fight with Zumbado is utterly impractical, leaving himself completely open.
  • Bad Liar:
    • Greg, when contemplating cancelling their 20th anniversary and telling Naomi that it is not because of her. She instantly spots it.
    • Jacob, off-screen, spills the beans to Annabelle about what he and Naomi have been doing, as he has a terrible poker face.
  • Batman Gambit: Zumbado gets Dee to agree to a fight where they agree to a Let's Fight Like Gentlemen approach where neither uses their powers, which Zumbado reneges on a short bit into the fight. When Dee complains about him breaking their rules Zumbado reveals that was the entire point of this whole fight; the threats that are coming aren't going to play by any rules or work with any honor so the two of them have to get Naomi ready for the battles to come as quickly as they can and trying to hold to things like honor is going to hinder them in that regard. It works and Dee accepts he'll have to change his approach if he wants Naomi to survive against what's coming.
  • Both Sides Have a Point:
    • Both Dee and Zumbado have valid points with their different training approaches, which is why they settle for a compromise of both of them teaching her at the end.
    • Naomi is right to point out that Annabelle is in danger because of her, but Annabelle is also right that she's old enough to make her own decisions.
  • The Bus Came Back: Lourdes comes back after being missing the last few episodes.
  • Cliffhanger: The end of the episode has Jacob locate another alien who may have taken Naomi's disc... and they are at the party downstairs.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: Lourdes towards Nathan and Anthony, who try to help her boost her sales by organizing an event without asking her.
  • Food Porn: The French breakfast Naomi makes for her parents.
  • Friendship Moment:
    • After blowing up at them for their misguided attempt to help Lourdes boost her sales, Lourdes apologizes to Nathan and Anthony for it, who likewise apologize for just organizing something without asking her. They then agree on organizing something new.
    • After fighting with Naomi over shutting her out, Annabelle comes to the party and the two make up, in direct reference to Jacob telling Naomi about Sam refusing to abandon Frodo, despite the dangers ahead of them.
  • Headbutting Heroes: Dee and Zumbado constantly bicker about which of their methods is the right one to use for Naomi, even coming to blows at one point.
  • I Lied: When Zumbado challenges Dee to a fight without powers, he instantly uses his powers after being overpowered by Dee hand-to-hand. He makes a point about it, saying that Naomi's enemies won't play fair either.

  • Lying to Protect Your Feelings: Realizing things are about to get legitimately dangerous, Naomi tries to push Annabelle away to protect her, hiding her findings from STAR Labs from her best friend. Annabelle, naturally, doesn't take it very well, but the two friends make up quickly.
  • MacGyvering: Jacob builds a device detecting alien signatures.
  • Mythology Gag: Lourdes's comic book shop has lots and lots of DC Comics characters everywhere, including posters, comics, and figures of Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Flash and other heroes.
  • Pet's Homage Name: Jacob has a dog named "Groucho Barx".
  • The Reveal: Naomi finds out her parents have been keeping a rented garage full of her old stuff, as well as passports and stacks of money, in case they needed to move.
  • Running Gag:
    • People keep telling Jacob, a massive The Lord of the Rings fan, that they don't like the movies.
    • Nathan and Anthony are confused whether Lord of the Rings counts as a comic book franchise or not.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The Lord of the Rings gets lots and lots of references in this episode. In addition to the episode title, the franchise gets name-dropped several times, and the moral of the episode is based on Sam forcing Frodo to let him tag along despite the danger.
    • E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial also gets a mention.
  • Wham Line: At the end, Jacob reveals that his scans show that the alien they are looking for is right there with them at the party!
