Betrayal

Directed By: Mark Piznarski
Written By: Jill Gordon

Angela thinks she's finally over Jordan, and she seems to be more into encouraging Rayanne as she tries out for one of the main roles in Our Town, and developing a crush on Corey Halfrick. However, Rayanne ends up sleeping with Jordan, Brian catches it on his video camera, and all hell breaks loose.

Elsewhere, Graham and Hallie work on getting the restaurant in order, and Patty begins to wonder about the two of them.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Anguished Declaration of Love: A rare platonic version, when Rayanne goes to thank Angela after she gets the part of Emily in the play, but Angela no longer wants to speak with her:
Rayanne: Well, I got the part. I never would have gotten it if it wasn't for you.
Angela: Look, I don't care anymore, okay? So just go away.
Rayanne: You're not the only one who got hurt.
Angela: Well, forgive me if I can't feel sorry for you, Rayanne.
Rayanne: You lost nothing, Angela. You lost a lousy, selfish friend, a guy you never really had, you lost nothing! [voice breaks] I lost a really good friend. I lost everything.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: When Angela wonders how Rickie could be happy for Rayanne getting the part, Rickie insists he's on Angela's side, but asks her, "Why were you making this big play for Corey Halfrick when you knew how I feel about him?" Angela stammers she thought Rickie was over him before realizing what she's saying.
  • Armor-Piercing Response: An interesting version in the person giving the response doesn't feel good about giving that response:
Rayanne: [to Sharon in the bathroom] So, congratulations, your dream came true.
    Sharon: What dream?
Rayanne: Now you've got an iron-clad, perfect excuse never to talk to me again. You should be celebrating.
Sharon: You think I'm happy about this? Somebody I care about has been hurt!
Rayanne: And you just couldn't wait to go to them with the news.
Sharon: Don't turn this around on me! I said what I said to protect her.
Rayanne: "Protect her." What a crock!
Sharon: That's right! So she would know. Because it's what you do, when someone's your friend. You brought this on yourself.
Rayanne: And you're just so happy I did.
Sharon: [voice breaking] No, I'm not. Not at all. [Rayanne has no response]
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: When Jordan approaches Brian in the hallway, Brian assumes he's looking for the tape, and yells at Jordan, insisting he can have the tape, and even offering to destroy it for him - only for Jordan to tell Brian he wants to know if it's okay if they skip tutoring.
  • Call-Back:
  • Disorganized Outline Speech: Well, sentence, but:
Brian: Is, um...is Rayanne, I mean, does she, like...is Angela, like...I mean, the thing is-
Rickie: Hey, hey, Brian. Could you, like, pick a sentence and go with it?
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: In-Universe - when Mr. Katimski has Angela read a part to substitute for an absentee actor, it's the last part of Our Town, when Emily is dead and realizing how precious life was, which ties in to what Rayanne and Angela are feeling about their wrecked friendship.
  • Flushing Toilet, Screaming Shower: While Graham is in the shower, he tells Patty how Hallie is irritating him, which Camille had told Patty earlier would be a sign that he might be having an affair with Hallie. Patty responds by flushing the toilet, causing Graham to scream.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: When Sharon first tells Angela about Jordan and Rayanne, Angela assumes at first this is just Sharon being jealous of Rayanne's friendship with Angela like she used to be, until Rickie tells her the truth.
  • Hypocritical Humor: One subplot involves Patty agreeing to participate in the clothing drive Camille's doing for her church. After it's over, Camille tells Patty they should celebrate by buying new clothes.
  • Method Acting: In-Universe - when playing Emily, Rayanne imitates Angela, because she thinks they're both sweet and innocent in the same way. When Rayanne's demonstrating this, Rickie comes up and wonders why she's crying like Angela.
  • Motor Mouth: Sharon becomes like this after Brian tells her about Jordan and Rayanne:
Sharon: [to Delia] I cannot believe it, what he told me. Do you believe it?
Delia: Well, that same thing happened to me at my school-
Sharon: I mean, what am I supposed to do? Am I supposed to tell her?
    Delia: Well, yeah, you're supposed-
Sharon: I can't tell her! It's not, like, my place to tell her. Right?
Delia: Well, aren't you really, really close-
Sharon: But if I don't tell her, is that like being a friend? Is it being more of a friend to tell her, or to not tell her?
    Delia: Well, I would-
Sharon: See, I can see not telling her, because if I tell her, it's almost like I'm saying, "See, I told you about Rayanne Graf!" And that's not what I would tell her, if I told her. Is it?
Delia: No, you'd be telling her because you're-
Sharon: See, I would wanna know. I mean, wouldn't you wanna know?
Delia: Well, yeah, I would definitely wanna know-
Sharon: Oh my God. Why did Brian Krakow have to witness this? And if Rayanne had to do this totally, lowlife, disgusting thing, couldn't she at least have done it in, like, private?
  • "Not So Different" Remark: After Patty tells Graham about Jordan and Rayanne, Graham wonders how anybody could be so insensitive, leading Patty to admit when she was in college and she had just been dumped, she slept with a guy Camille had a crush on.
  • Off the Wagon: Rayanne getting drunk again may have had something to do with her sleeping with Jordan.
  • Operation: Jealousy: Lampshaded by Angela, who, while she's listening to Corey talk about Our Town, swears in a voiceover she's really interested in what he has to say, and not just because Jordan happens to be watching her from the lockers.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business:
    • Though Brian is still hung up on Delia, when he wants to talk to Sharon about the tape he shot of Jordan and Rayanne having sex, he asks Delia, "Could you just excuse us for a second?"
    • Angela is so upset about Jordan and Rayanne she decides to dress like Rayanne, asks Corey if he wants to get drunk, and she even tries to kiss him.
  • Right Behind Me: When Sharon and Delia are in the bathroom, and Sharon is agonizing over whether to tell Angela about Jordan and Rayanne (see Motor Mouth above), she opens the door to a toilet stall, only to find Angela standing right there. Sharon looks guilty.
  • Shaped Like Itself: Sharon tells Brian to go out with his camera and just get "a few shots of people hanging out where...people hang out."
  • Shout-Out: When Brian is talking to someone about being a videographer, he claims he was first influenced by Steven Spielberg, but now he's more influenced by Quentin Tarantino.
  • Snark-to-Snark Combat: And this is before Angela and Rayanne have a falling out over Rayanne sleeping with Jordan:
Angela (as Rayanne is about to go for her audition) Rayanne, think of it this way! Acting is lying, and who's a better liar than you?
Rayanne: You know, when something matters to you, you do this, like, hair flick thing? And then your eyes get all wide?
