Todoroki expresses to Midoriya that he will defeat him and show his true power. As the Sports Festival begins, the students from the four branches of the school — Hero, General Studies, Business and Support Courses — participate in an obstacle-course race.
Tropes:
- Cornered Rattlesnake: Midoriya suspects that Bakugo's jerkass boast was an intentional attempt to invoke this on himself: now he has no choice but to give it all to win. Too bad his actions pushed the rest of Class 1-A in that corner as well, not that Bakugo cares.
- Foreshadowing: Bakugo makes an ass of himself when taking the student pledge by boasting that he's going to win the festival. Sure enough...
- Innocuously Important Episode: Shinso of General Studies and Tetsutetsu of Class 1-B make their appearances here. Both Shinso and all of Class 1-B become part of the competition against Class 1-A during this arc and will play a big role with and against them in future stories.
- Jerkass Has a Point: Bakugo may be a jerk in school and at the start of the festival, but he has every right to consider that the rest of the student body have taken notice of their harrowing experience against real-live Villains, during their first semester.
- Throwing Down the Gauntlet: Todoroki does this to Midoriya, who accepts.
- Training Montage: Every student is shown to be preparing for the festival in his own way. Kirishima is jumping off roofs, Yaoyorozu is reading up, Mineta is practicing his speech...
