Written By: Peter S. Fischer

After a recently escaped convict dies in a car accident, Jessica is sued by his daughter for helping piece together the case against her father, who she claims was wrongfully imprisoned.

Tropes:

  • Amoral Attorney: Charles Emmett Cosmo is an Ambulance Chaser who attempts to sue Jessica in a wrongful death suit, figuring that her insurance company will settle out-of-court rather than face the hassle of a trial. At the end of the episode, he is disbarred after it is revealed that he bribed a key witness to the original case $25,000 to change his testimony so they'd have ammo to sue Jessica.
  • Clear My Name: Geraldine Stone initially seemed like she was trying to clear her father's name. Then it turns out she has an ulterior motive. It is Jessica who spends majority of the episode doing the clearing instead.
  • Dead Man Honking: Happens when a van crashes during an attempted prison breakout at the start of the episode.
  • Domestic Abuser: Justin apparently browbeat Geraldine into having the lawsuit brought against Jessica so he could use the money to open his own pastry shop. When Geraldine eventually decides she can't go through with the scam, Justin walks out on her.
  • Driven to Suicide: Angelo Vitello killed himself out of shame from having accepted Cosmo's bribe, and left the money to his wife. Mrs. Vitello knew what her husband did and hid both the money and the note simply because Angelo was a devout Catholic, so committing suicide meant he wouldn't be buried in consecrated ground.
  • Face Death with Dignity: In the end, it's revealed that Angelo Vitello killed himself out of guilt for accepting the bribe to recant his testimony.
  • Frivolous Lawsuit: Jessica is subjected to a $50 million wrongful death suit in this episode, with the Amoral Attorney expecting her insurance company will settle out-of-court for $1 million. He doesn't figure on Jessica's stubbornness.
  • Insurance Fraud: Geraldine Stone and Justin Fields were trying to scam Jessica's insurance company with a frivolous lawsuit.
  • Offscreen Karma:
    • The ending states that Charles Emmett Cosmo is going to get disbarred for paying off Angelo Vitello to falsify his testimony.
    • Justin Fields pressured Geraldine into suing Jessica to make easy money for himself. After Geraldine recants her case, he breaks up with her but will be left with no money, Meal Ticket, or job, since he got himself unceremoniously fired due to hedging his bets on the lawsuit.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Jessica was initially suspected of murdering Angelo Vitello because a blonde woman wearing a trench coat and sunglasses... at 7 in the evening was seen leaving the Vitello residence right before he died. Jessica lampshades the trope upon hearing it.
  • Police Lineup: Jessica is "asked" to join in one, wearing the paper-thin disguise described above along with 4 other blonde women. Thankfully, she could not be pinpointed as the possible perp.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Jessica delivers a subdued version when she makes Geraldine understand her actions weren't so "harmless" because of how much money Jessica would've lost alongside the damage the lawsuit would've done to her reputation.
  • Suicide, Not Murder: It's revealed that the Victim of the Week actually committed suicide, but his wife covered it up and attempted to make it look like murder.
