In an episode infamous for making kids cry, Genki and the Searchers enter a forest protected by a Baku—a Monster who resembles a big, friendly dog. Baku latches onto Genki immediately and protects him from all harm, and especially from the Chariot Durahan sends after the group.
As it turns out, the Baku's owner (and said owner's parents) had been killed by the Chariot, and his owner looked like Genki. As a puppy, he tried to fight them off, but failed. When Chariot nearly kills Genki, Baku defeats him, but is mortally wounded in the fight. So he goes back to the house and curls up in front of a picture of his owner before dying.
This episode contains examples of:
- Beam-O-War: The final clash between Baku and Chariot. Baku won...before succumbing to his wounds.
- Big Friendly Dog: Baku.
- Downer Ending: Though Baku avenges his village's destruction and kills the Chariot Durahan sent, he dies shortly after. What by all means should be a Bittersweet Ending, the final scene will turn the viewer into a crying wreck.
- Although, once the Phoenix defeats Moo, Baku becomes a Mystery Disk that can be unlocked again.
- Undying Loyalty: Even after everything was gone, Baku stayed behind to protect the forest and Genki.
