Recap / Miss Fishers Murder Mysteries S 3 E 03 Murder And Mozzarella

Go To

  • Abusive Parents: Nonna Luisa was an abusive grandmother and, implicitly, mother too - Guido bitterly observes that she didn't even cry when his wife, her daughter, died. She also beat her granddaughter with a rolling pin for anything up to and including imperfectly cutting the garlic, and was prepared to have her murdered if she didn't obey.
  • The Dog Bites Back: Mariana, regularly beaten by her grandmother with a rolling pin, is the one who adds the poisonous mushrooms to her grandmother's food, thus killing her.
  • Everyone Can See It: Phryne and Jack, by this point.
  • Evil Matriarch: Nonna Luisa, to the point of being an Asshole Victim.
  • Graceful Loser: Guido ruefully concedes his interest in Phryne after she gently lets him down following their one night, correctly guessing that there's someone else and remarking that that person is a lucky man. Likewise, Concetta sadly acknowledges that while Jack cares for her very much, he's interested in someone else (and it's pretty clear that she's worked out it's Phryne).
  • Never Mess with Granny: Nonna Luisa was, Beneath the Mask of the sweet Granny Classic, an objectively awful person, but she was definitely formidable - she put up a significant fight against Vincenzo, a strong young man, and she was no stranger to hiring killers.
  • Playing Both Sides: Roberto Salvatore kept fanning the flames of the feud.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: Lorenzo and Mariana are romantically involved, but keeping it a secret because their families have been business competitors for generations. The reason for this is that Papa Antonio, Lorenzo's grandfather, and Nonna Luisa, Mariana's grandmother, were this in their own right.
  • Sympathetic Murderer: It is really hard to blame Mariana for lashing out after a lifetime of physical and mental abuse, especially when faced with being exiled back to a village in a country she only nominally comes from, away from her beloved, and faced with the prospect of being murdered herself on her own grandmother's orders if she didn't obey.
