Recap / M*A*S*H S7 E18: The Young and the Restless

Go To

A lecture from the unnervingly young Captain Simmons has Potter and Charles feeling their age - not helped by a flare-up of Potter's phlebitis. Meanwhile Klinger's newest Section 8 routine has him claiming to be a civilian in Toledo.

Attention, all hands! Captain Simmons will be introducing the following tropes at the medical meeting:

  • Beat Without a "But": After Captain Simmons proves his mettle in the operating room and then some, Hawkeye sees B.J. sheepishly reading a medical journal out of fear they're losing touch, and tries to reassure him:
Hawkeye: So he's younger than us. So he's up to date on all the latest medical techniques...(Beat)...so let me read that when you're done.
  • Bowdlerize: Some broadcast prints of the episode drop the audio for Klinger's Social Security Number (at the time the episode was filmed, the number was just that, the account number for the Social Security System. In the years since, it's become the keys to a person's identity, and it's possible the number was genuine).
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Charles does this for three days straight after Captain Simmons upstages him in the OR.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Margaret doesn't slap or hit Col. Potter to get him out of bed, but she does pull him up and push him just to get him to fight back.
  • Heroic BSoD: Radar's poor choice of works in telling Col. Potter that "he isn't needed" causes the Colonel to fall into one.
  • Honor Before Reason: An interesting variation. When wounded arrive during Klinger's scheme, he can't just sit by and not help but doesn't want to expose his scam, so he incorporates them into his scam by saying that they are victims of a multiple car accident and he is helping as a good citizen.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Radar had good intentions when he tells Potter to go get treated for his phlebitis as they can handle things here while he's gone, but the way he words it made it sound to Potter that he's not wanted or needed anymore.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Radar and Margaret feel this way about the fact Potter refuses to get out of bed (thanks to Radar's Innocently Insensitive remark to him), which makes Margaret go and try and get him out of bed (see Get A Hold Of Yourself Man above).
  • Rabbit Season Duck Season: How Potter defeats Klinger's Section 8 attempt during The Tag: By asking for Klinger's info in order to fill out a form. When Klinger reflexively answers "Corporal" for his Army rank, Potter proves that Klinger's attempt at pretending he's still in Toledo was another act.
