Recap / Martha Speaks S 5 E 1 Puppy Skits

Go To

Alice is visiting with the Lorraines, and Helen is confused because T.D. apparently wants Skits to help him with his science homework, since he thinks Skits can use wormholes to travel. Martha then explains that T.D. has a false notion about Skits related to something that happened in the past. She then starts explaining how T.D. found Skits.

It began when he was staying on C.K.'s farm, and he had a comic he loved about a time-travelling paleontologist. However, he was only reading one page a day (and one panel every few hours) so that he could go the whole vacation without finishing it.

One night, he'd just finished reading, when he and C.K. heard howling outside. They split up, and T.D. eventually found the source: Skits as a puppy. He brought him inside and, due to thinking that the puppy's thinness was due to malnourishment, fed him all the food in the fridge. C.K. met Skits, and then T.D. named him. Then, they made some "pet found" posters, and T.D. trained Skits a bit.

T.D. wanted to keep Skits, but then realised O.G. was allergic to dogs. He then realised that he wasn't allergic to Martha, so he tried showing Skits to O.G., but O.G. turned out to be allergic to him after all. Then, T.D. went to say goodbye to Skits, but he was gone, so he went home without him.

Back in the present, Martha tells Skits's side of the story. Skits apparently loved T.D. because his crawling on all fours in an attempt to teach him to fetch a stick reminded him of dogs, and he got sad when he learnt he couldn't live with the Kennellys. Fortunately, however, Skits stowed away in T.D.'s bag and hid under his bed. Later, T.D. dropped a granola bar, and when he saw it vanish (actually due to Skits stealing it), he thought it was a wormhole. After determining that the granola bar went under his bed, he went to check out the "wormhole", with O.G. accompanying him. When the Kennelly men found Skits, they think a wormhole transported him there, then T.D. gave Skits to the Lorraines.

Back in the present, T.D. comes in and asks why the girls and dogs are looking at him funny. Martha tells the truth, but T.D. isn't disappointed — wormholes may still exist even if Skits didn't travel through one. He then brings a stick he found under the bed, which Skits apparently left on the farm. This implies that, while Skits didn't travel through a wormhole, they may possibly exist.

This episode provides examples of

  • Ambiguous Ending: It's never revealed exactly how that stick entered T.D.'s bedroom, though the possibility was raised that it could have been a wormhole.
  • Amusing Injuries: When T.D. thinks there's a wormhole in his bedroom wall, he runs into it on purpose and says, "Ow!", then later O.G. does it too.
  • Ate It All: Invoked — T.D. feeds the young Skits all the food in the fridge.
  • Big Eater: Skits was apparently an even bigger eater than he is now in the puppy, eating all the food in the fridge.
  • Cock-a-Doodle Dawn: Justified when the rooster crows in the morning, since the scene takes place on a farm.
  • The Cuckoolander Was Right: Downplayed. While T.D. and O.G. were definitely wrong about Skits travelling through a wormhole, they may have been right about wormholes existing.
  • Ditzy Genius: O.G., despite being a smart inventor, does the same thing his son did earlier and tests for a wormhole by running into the wall, hurting himself.
  • Dramatic Irony: The Kennelly men think Skits travelled in a wormhole, when we know he travelled in a duffel bag.
  • Early Personality Signs: Skits is seen in the present eating a fly, then in the past as a puppy eating a firefly. He's also shown to be just as energetic as a puppy as he is now.
  • Faux Horrific: T.D. describes waiting a day to read the next page of his comic book as "agony".
  • Foregone Conclusion: Seeing as the episode is in the past, we already know what Skits will end up being named, and that he will live with the Lorraines instead of the Kennellys.
  • Formally-Named Pet: The giraffe sidekick in T.D.'s comic is named Sir Charles Bubbles Giraffe.
  • Labcoat of Science and Medicine: The paleontologist in T.D.'s comic wears a lab coat.
  • Meaningful Name:
    • The time-traveller in T.D.'s comic has "Timepiece" as his last name.
    • Played with when T.D. almost named Skits "Skitters" due to him skittering around, but then he didn't.
  • Origins Episode: This episode explains how T.D. found Skits.
  • Plot Allergy: When O.G. sniffs Skits, he says, "I can't smell a thing; not a—-" and then sneezes before he can finish his sentence.
  • Race-Name Basis: Due to Skits originally having no name, T.D. initially calls him "puppy".
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: If the stick did enter T.D.'s bedroom through a wormhole, then he and O.G. were right about there being one under T.D.'s bed, but wrong in their belief that Skits travelled through it.
  • Slapstick:
    • T.D. falls in the water when walking Skits backwards.
    • When O.G. sneezes, he falls backwards in his chair.
  • Speak in Unison: When the Kennelly men see Skits, they simulatneously exclaiming, "It worked!".
  • Species Surname: The giraffe in T.D.'s comic has "Giraffe" as a last name.
  • Time Travel: Conversed. T.D. reads a comic about a time-travelling paleontologist.
  • Toilet Humour: T.D. yells, "Ahh! My posters!" and then C.K. says, "At least he's paper trained", implying that Skits either pooped or peed on T.D.'s posters.
  • Unusual Pets for Unusual People: T.D.'s comic features a time-travelling paleontologist who keeps a pet giraffe.
  • We Named the Monkey "Jack": T.D. almost names Skits "Jake" (which is the name of Helen's little brother), but he eventually decides not to.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: The bulk of the episode depicts how T.D. found Skits.
