Recap / Martha Speaks S 1 E 55 Virtually Martha

Go To

Martha explains that the episode is about machines, while Dynamo the robot dog insists that she is the robot and not him. Then, Helen is seen helping Grandma Lucille install a computer and teaching her how to email, with Martha, who doesn't like computers, nearby. Martha falls asleep from boredom, then starts dreaming.

The dream begins with her asleep on the Lorraines' armchair. She wakes up (within the dream) to find Alice using a laptop on the couch. She asks for Helen, but Martha says that Helen went outside, so Alice thanks Martha and leaves. Martha tells Skits that she doesn't understand why people like computers, then mockingly imitates a person using Alice's laptop.

While mocking, she disappears into thin air and Skits runs outside barking fearfully. Helen tells Alice that she'll do research at the library and promises to email her if she finds anything, then Skits shows Helen the laptop. Alice thinks that he's reminding her to bring it with her, so she thanks him and leaves with it.

Helen goes to the library, finds a book on worms, and emails Alice. Then, she gets an email from Martha saying she's stuck in Alice's laptop. Assuming it's a joke, Helen replies by telling Martha to be home in time for dinner and asking her when she learned to read and type. She then calls Alice about the "joke", noting that the email came from her account, but Alice denies having sent it. She asks Ronald if he sent the email, but he denies it also.

Alice checks the email, then shouts in surprise and shows Helen, who both see an image of Martha on the screen. The girls take the laptop to the computer store, and the shopkeeper thinks they're joking, until they show him. He tries to get her out by pushing buttons, but it doesn't work. Then, he tries shaking the computer, but that just jostles her around.

At the Boxwood house, Martha is worried she'll never get out, but the girls are still hopeful. Helen goes for a walk with Skits and the laptop with Martha onscreen, but she's annoyed that she can't smell or go into the outside world. That evening, the Lorraines are having dinner and have borrowed Alice's laptop, and Martha begins searching through the trash bin icon for food.

She then falls into the bin, through a sea of binary, and into a white void with a door. She meets an anthropomorphic deleted folder who welcomes her to the "party". She asks how to get home and he doesn't know, but suggests she move to the left, which she does, until she finds herself in the Boxwoods' living room, with the Christmas decorations up even though it isn't Christmas. She goes outside to find Helen and her friends in costume, making her realise that she's just in an old photo of Alice's birthday party.

She keeps heading left, only to find herself in a video game belonging to Ronald. She finds three monsters and asks them for directions, a bit nervous that they're unfriendly, but they ignore her. Then, she finds herself in another video game banging against seashells, and the monsters follow her. They chase her into another game, eat a car, and she digs and lands in the Christmas photo again.

The monsters show up again, so Martha leaps, and ends up back on the desktop, but two monsters follow her. She calls for help and Helen runs up. Martha reveals that she plans to email herself and asks how. Helen teaches her, (while this is happening, it's revealed how she managed to send the earlier email; everything she says gets typed).

Then, the dream ends and Helen wakes Martha up. While Helen and Martha are on the way home, the latter tells the former about the dream. Then, a man shows up with steak (which Martha ordered in her dream) causing her to wonder if it was real.

Finally, the folder appears again and tells the audience what a file is.

This episode provides examples of

  • Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: The folder shows a photo of a family of worms. The father wears a hat and bowtie, the mother wears a necklace, the son wears a baseball cap, and the daughter wears a bow and a frilly collar.
  • Amusing Injuries:
    • Martha bumps her face on the screen when trying to catch a squirrel, then falls on her face when Skits knocks the laptop over.
    • In one video game, Martha bashes against seashells and shouts, "Ow!".
  • Angst? What Angst?: In-Universe. The folder admits to being unneeded and thrown away, but he's very cheerful and enjoys not having to "work" again.
  • Animate Inanimate Object: At one point, Martha meets a walking, talking, deleted folder.
  • Artistic License – Biology: In the photo of the worms, they seem to have two sexes, and the father has a moustache. Real worms are hermaphrodites and don't grow hair.
  • Christmas in July: Subverted. Martha thinks she's in the Boxwoods' living room with the Christmas tree up even though it isn't Christmas, but it turns out she's in an old Christmas photo.
  • Continuity Nod: One of the photos Martha finds herself in involves Alice's birthday party seen in "Martha Takes the Cake".
  • Copycat Mockery: When Martha is talking to Skits about not understanding the big deal about computers, she sits at the laptop, presses the keyboard, and imitates a human with a dopey voice.
  • Crashing Dreams: Helen is confused as to how Martha knew all the computer words, but then realises that she must have heard her say them in her sleep.
  • Dogs Hate Squirrels: Martha tries to chase a squirrel from inside the laptop, but she can't.
  • Dream Episode: The majority of this episode follows Martha dreaming about being sucked into a computer.
  • Extreme Omnivore: The video game monsters eat a car, then the wall, then a CD.
  • Genki Girl: Or in this case, Genki Guy. The folder talks excitedly and leaps a lot.
  • Howl of Sorrow: Skits howls when Martha disappears and Alice takes the laptop away.
  • Language Barrier: The monsters only make noises, so Martha says, "I don't speak monster. Do you speak human?".
  • Motor Mouth: Discussed. According to Grandma Lucille, IT specialists never talk slowly.
  • Nap-Inducing Speak: Martha is so bored by Helen's explanation of emails that she falls asleep and dreams the rest of the episode.
  • Nightmare Sequence: Towards the end of the dream, it becomes a nightmare about being chased by monsters.
  • No Name Given: The deleted folder is unnamed.
  • Or Was It a Dream?: The episode ends with a man asking if anyone ordered steak, which Martha did in her dream, causing her to wonder if the events were real. Seeing as Martha was clearly seen sleeping and waking up though, he probably just had the wrong address.
  • Snarking Thanks: Ronald insincerely "thanks" Alice for interrupting his gaming session.
  • Stock Animal Diet: Martha orders a steak online.
  • Technologically Blind Elders: Grandma Lucille doesn't have a clue how to install a computer and when the man in the store tries to explain, she doesn't understand.
  • Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: In the photo of the worm family, the father wears a hat and a bowtie and has a moustache, the mother wears a pearl necklace, the son wears a baseball cap, and the daughter wears a bow.
