Art by Crosshot: Be sure to know your past: it might help with your future.
Cat takes center stage for once when she has an encounter with a ghost who may have a connection to her.

Tropes that appear in this chapter:

  • Adaptation Species Change: Downplayed. Although Cat remains a witch, she's revealed to have human genetics in her family bloodline.
  • Barred from the Afterlife: Jamila is implied to have been stuck in limbo since her death given the hints from her reunion with her mother.
  • The Bus Came Back
  • Childhood Friends: It's mentioned that Amelia and Cat have been friends since they were little.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Simon's arm is still in a cast since the Bonesborough Brawl.
    • Luz mentions her having to face off against the Inner Demon soon.
  • Crush Blush: Upon seeing Carter, who later becomes her future husband, for the first time, Jamila's face heats up.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Jamila and her mother were both slaves who worked on a plantation, and they were separated when Jamila's mother led their slave drivers away so Jamila could escape, which led to her ending up in the Boiling Isles through a lake with Titan Blood in it.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Cat leads on her own for the first time as her family history is explored.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Once Cat promises to Jamila that her story will always be known, Jamila ascends to Heaven and reunites with her mother after 400 years apart.
  • Foreshadowing: Camel being Cat's ancestor makes sense if you remember the Animal Theme Naming of the Harwitch family.
  • The Ghost: Cat mentions Amity having told her about the library's echo mice problem.
  • Given Name Reveal: Scotty's last name is brought up; it's Fyda.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: No, Part-Human Hybrid Descendant. Jamila, a human who ended up in the Isles during the Savage Ages, was an adopted member of the Harwitch family. As such, Cat, Dog, and Moose have human ancestry.
  • Killed Offscreen: After splitting up from her mother, Jamila ends up in the Demon Realm and by the time they're reunited, she's been in Heaven all along. Odds are she was killed by the men coming after her following their escape.
  • Meaningful Name: "Jubilee" is another name for Juneteenth, otherwise known as "Jubilee Day"
  • Named by the Adaptation: The Illusion teacher is now named Ms. Rachelle, after her second voice actress, Rachael MacFarlane.
  • Odd Name Out: Due to being adopted into the Harwitch family, who're named after Earth animals, Jamila stands out. Her husband, Carter Harwitch, is another example.
  • One-Steve Limit: Carter Harwitch shares his name with Carter the Coven Scout from present day.
  • Out of Focus: As a sidetrack, the main cast isn't focused on. Luz and Gus have supporting roles, and Boscha & Skara have cameos in their respective tracks during Cat's time in class.
  • The Reveal:
    • The Harwitch family has some human ancestry through a woman named Jamila, who ended up in the Boiling Isles as a child in the 1600's after escaping the slave plantation she and her mother were imprisoned on. She had nightmares about the Horned King but after seeing the spirit of the Titan, fought off his influence and was able to live a happy life.
      • According to the Titan, the Horned King can't influence witchkind like it can mortals from other realms as the magic of the Boiling Isles protects them from him.
    • Moose acts like the Harwirch siblings' grandpa Goat, who died the day before Moose was born.
    • Cat's been learning to play nakers (kettledrums) in the Bard track.
  • Unfinished Business: Jamila finds that Cat can see her when no one else can and asks for her help to find her mother's old journal so their life story can be known. Once Cat finds it, confirms Jamila's her ancestor, and promises to tell her story by adding her to their family tree, Jamila ascends to Heaven.
  • Very Special Episode: The sidetrack is treated as one by the authors since it focuses on the dark history of human slavery before the Emancipation Proclamation was decreed.
  • Whole Episode Flashback: Most of the sidetrack is Jamila telling her story to Cat.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: This sidetrack is one to The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder Season 2 finale, "Juneteenth".
