Recap / Lucifer (2016) S05E09 "Family Dinner"

Go To

Having stopped his children from fighting each other, God invites Lucifer, Amenadiel, and Michael for a family dinner, held in Linda's house. Maze, who is still searching for a soul, tries asking God for it. Meanwhile, Chloe, Dan, and Ella are investigating the death of a man burned to death in a golf course, with Ella struggling to recover from her disastrous romance with a serial killer.

Tropes present in the episode include:

  • Accidental Murder: Chris's girlfriend accidentally killed him when he tried to stop her from burning down the Kingdom.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Throughout the dinner, Amenadiel tries to defend God from Lucifer's criticisms, until Lucifer asks him about his own son.
Lucifer: Be honest Amenadiel. Would you ever treat Charlie the way dad treats us?
  • Be Yourself: God basically tells Maze that she is perfect the demonic way she is. Unfortunately, she takes this as meaning that violence is all she is about.
  • Break the Cutie: Ella obviously has difficulty moving on from the debacle with Pete. When the LAPD is about to interview the suspects, she tells Chloe and Dan to introduce her to them, bluntly saying that whomever she is attracted to is the killer.
  • Calling the Old Man Out: Lucifer calls out God over dinner, trying to force him to say whether he loved his children. When he receives a Non-Answer, he takes that as meaning that God is incapable of love, and tells him as much.
  • Continuity Nod: Juan assumes Chloe and Lucifer have come to arrest him for possession of ZX3, a highly illegal chemical that was previously featured in "A Good Day to Die" as part of the cure for Chloe's poison. Lucifer acknowledges the connection by mentioning that the two of them are familiar with the substance.
  • Dinner and a Show: The titular family dinner is an extremely awkward one for everyone present, as Lucifer rants about his father's flaws and gets into an argument with Michael. After Amenadiel fails to mediate, God eventually has to raise his voice and bring a thunderstorm for them to stop blabbering.
  • Dysfunctional Family: Lucifer's divine family is one, with the mortal parallel being the victim of the week's family, the Petersons. The children hate each other's guts and have no problem throwing their siblings under the bus.
  • Hidden Depths: While he apologizes to his father, Amenadiel is forced to admit that he wants to be a better parent to his son than God ever was to him.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: During the dinner, Amenadiel is seen emptying cup after cup to cope with the increasing argument between Lucifer and Michael.
  • Mirthless Laughter: After the circus that is Lucifer's and Michael's fight and God bringing a sudden thunderstorm around her house, Linda begins cracking up because of the stress of it all.
  • Non-Answer: God's default way of answering questions, something that riles Lucifer up to no end. However, Lucifer realizes that he's the same way.
  • Not So Above It All: Zig-Zagged. When Amenadiel apologizes on behalf of his family for their dysfunction, Linda comments that in spite of the circumstances, their dysfunctional nature makes the family unusually normal.
  • Papa Wolf: Peter Peterson. He tried to shoot Chris's girlfriend when he realized that she killed his son, but backs down when she told him that it was an accident when Chris tried to stop her from burning down the family business.
  • Repetitive Name: The owner of the Kingdom is named Peter Peterson. Lucifer comments how it's the "best name ever."
  • Put on a Bus: God dismisses Michael and tells him to return back to Heaven, which he does begrudgingly.
  • Sequel Hook: Michael tells Maze that he isn't done messing around with Lucifer's life yet, meaning that we will probably see him again sooner or later.
  • Tastes Like Chicken: Linda comments that the reason why this trope is even a thing is because chicken must be God's favorite. She only says this after Mirthless Laughter in order to break the tension of their arguing.
  • Theme Twin Naming: God confirms that Lucifer and Michael were originally named Samael and Mikael as a set of rhyming names.
  • Thicker Than Water: Despite leaving the family business and going to their rival, Chris Peterson did not want his girlfriend to burn the estate to the ground.
  • The Three Faces of Adam: Of the three angelic siblings, Michael is ambitious and planning to usurp God (Hunter), Lucifer has established his own purpose on Earth, punishing evil on his own terms (Lord), and Amenadiel has given up on doing things of cosmic importance and is just focused on being a good father (Prophet).
