Recap / Lucifer (2016) S04E07 "Devil Is as Devil Does"

Go To

Eve decides she wants to come along on the next murder case, leaving Lucifer feeling torn between Eve's and Chloe's approach to punishment. Meanwhile, Amenadiel and Remiel argue over the ultimate fate of Linda's child.

Tropes present in the episode include:

  • Armor-Piercing Response: Lucifer delivers one to Chloe during an argument that leaves her speechless for a few moments.
Lucifer: What makes you the authority on right and wrong?
Chloe: Because I'm a cop, and it's the law.
Lucifer: Well I'm THE DEVIL, and I ruled HELL.
  • Avenging the Villain: Jacob Tiernan seeks to avenge his criminal son Julian, who was crippled by Lucifer in the previous episode.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • It seems that Remiel is stalking Linda, but it's Maze.
    • At the end, Lucifer seems to be dealing Jacob a vigilante justice like he did with Julian. Cut to the LAPD precinct, where Lucifer is seen bringing Jacob to be interrogated.
  • Broken Pedestal: Remiel looked up at Amenadiel based on his original stern personality. She isn't pleased when she learns that not only is Amenadiel content to live among humans, he will stop at nothing to protect his half-human child from being taken by her.
  • The Conscience: Chloe acts like Lucifer's shoulder angel during their confrontation with Tiernan, and tries to remind him that he's better than that.
  • The Corrupter: Eve brings out the worst in Lucifer and acts like his shoulder devil during their confrontation with Tiernan.
  • Death Glare: Trixie gives one to Eve, not trusting that she's the right friend for Lucifer.
  • Flat-Earth Atheist: Ella has unknowingly become this, openly declaring "it's all bullshit" in reference to Heaven and Hell, unaware she's working alongside the Devil.
  • Free-Range Children: Trixie leaves her house through her bedroom window at night and orders an Uber to Lux so she can meet Lucifer. Downplayed in that Chloe and Dan are horrified upon finding out and immediately race to find her.
  • Get Out!: Jacob Tiernan screams this when Lucifer calls him out on his child raising.
  • Good Angel, Bad Angel: Chloe and Eve fulfill these roles for Lucifer.
    • Chloe tries to steer him down the "good path", i.e. dealing with criminals within the confines of the law. Eve, on the other hand, consistently goads him towards the darker path of vigilante justice, all to satisfy her constant need for amusement.
    • When Lucifer "hulks out" in Tiernan's office, Chloe is standing by his right shoulder and advises restraint, while Eve is standing by his left shoulder and stokes his fury against the sleazebag. Appropriately, Chloe is dressed in subdued blue hues, while Eve is wearing a red-and-black dress.
  • Go Through Me: Eve places herself between Trixie and a couple of armed thugs without a second thought. This also serves as a Pet the Dog moment, since the recent focus on her bad influence on Lucifer wasn't doing her character any favors.
  • Internal Reveal: When Dan suspects correctly that Lucifer broke Julian's back, Chloe doesn't believe Lucifer would go that far. She was shocked and distraught to learn he did do it.
  • Ironic Echo: Lucifer, taunting Jacob about his son, describes Julian as a "broken little doll", which was how Julian himself described his human trafficking victims.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Yes, Dan has been a massive douche since Charlotte died, and yes, he has had it out for Lucifer, but he is right that Julian's mental state is similar to some of Lucifer's past victims and that, though he may not be thinking objectively, neither is Chloe. And then it's revealed that he was absolutely right about Lucifer breaking Julian's back.
  • Mistaken for Murderer: Jacob thought Sam killed Julian because his son owed him money.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Not said verbally, but immediately after finding out that Tiernan killed Sam, Dan starts to panic (having informed him that Lucifer, not Sam, is the one who broke Julian's back), mumbling that he didn't think he was "capable" of murder. It gets worse when he finds out that Trixie is with Lucifer. He appears guilty over the whole thing through the rest of the episode.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite grilling Eve in a stern impression of her mother, Trixie can't quite help but admit her admiration that Eve doesn't have a job but "[...] Just gets to be [her]."
  • Papa Wolf:
    • Lucifer already had it out for Tiernan before, but when his men tried to kill Trixie, all bets are off.
    • Amenadiel beats Remiel to a bloody pulp to prevent her from taking his son to Heaven.
  • Perp Sweating: Parodied, with Trixie 'interrogating' Eve, cop-style.
  • Professional Killer: Tiernan uses some to first kill Sam and then nearly kill Lucifer.
  • Prophecy Twist: Chloe and Kinley theorize that the Devil's first love may not be Chloe, but Eve. As the two converse, Lucifer reveals his new batlike wings to Linda, apparently confirming that this is true.
  • The Reveal: Kinley has been trying to contact Chloe.
  • Thrill Seeker: Eve constantly pushes Lucifer to hunt down and "punish" bad guys, solely for her amusement.
  • Title Drop: As is tradition for the show.
Chloe: So... Tiernan's gonna double his legal defence now that you've hulked out in his office.
Lucifer: Devil is as Devil does.
  • Trailers Always Spoil: The reveal of Lucifer's "devil wings" at the end of the episode loses some of its impact if you've seen the poster for this season.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Dan revealing that Lucifer was the one to break Julian's back causes Tiernan to send two professional killers to Lucifer's home, while Trixie is there.
    • He was also one of the ones pushing Lucifer down the darker path in the first place in the previous episode, by telling him he'd never be a good person, he'd always be a destroyer.
  • Wham Shot:
    • Lucifer reveals his wings to Linda, showing that they have become more leathery and bat-like (i.e. more traditional to what you would expect from the devil).
    • Dan and Ella kiss.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Chloe calls Lucifer out for not only breaking Julian's back, but intending to hurt Jacob too.
