Recap / Lucifer (2016) S04E04 "All About Eve"

Go To

When a jewelry designer is murdered, Lucifer and Chloe strive to solve the case without each other's help. Also, Lucifer reconnects with an old flame.

Tropes present in the episode include:

  • Amicable Exes: Lucifer and Eve, though it's pretty clear Eve wants to be a bit more than that.
  • Arranged Marriage: Eve lampshades that her creation was for this purpose and it was partially to blame for the spark dying in her and Adam's relationship.
  • Badass Bystander: Eve hits a guy on the head with a bottle. He was about to hit her in return when a waitress beat the crap out of him; afterwards she gives Eve a high five.
  • Bar Brawl: Lucifer and Eve start one (to Eve's delight), since the woman they're pursuing has bribed the bar staff to stop them.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Lucifer seems like he's going to offer Eve a bed, and he does... by renting her a hotel room.
  • Berserk Button: Toby is fed up with bailing out Pablo, the screw-up. When he found Pablo all beaten up and the necklace was missing, Toby just lost it and killed Pablo.
  • Boom, Headshot!: The thug is startled into shooting Lucifer in the face. Thankfully, Nigh-Invulnerability helps the Devil survive without a scratch— and, as a bonus, gets him out of his funk.
  • Born as an Adult: Amenadiel reveals that angels were created fully formed by God and Goddess, so the forms and appearances of Lucifer, Amenadiel, Uriel, and Azrael are the ones they always had.
  • Cannot Spit It Out: It's pretty clear Eve wants to be with Lucifer, but she either tries to get with him indirectly, or gets cold feet at the last second. She finally spits it out at the end of the episode.
  • Can't Stand Them, Can't Live Without Them: Lucifer pisses Chloe off all the damn time, but as this episode shows, she misses him when he's not around.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Lucifer is on the giving end of one to the occupants of Dalton's Place.
  • Description Cut: Chloe assures Ella that Lucifer isn't too bothered by their bad fight because, hey, it's Lucifer. Cut to an unkempt Lucifer walking around Lux in his undergarments and with holey socks on.
  • Delayed Reaction:
Linda: It wasn't easy, none of it is! The devil, a demon...
    Chloe: Mm-hmm.
Linda: Dating an angel. Having his baby.
Chloe: Mm-hmm. Wait, what? You're pregnant!
  • Foil: Chloe and Eve. Both are humans that have had a relationship with Lucifer before finding out about his true self. When Chloe found out, she was so struck with shock that she ran away for a month, and is even considered weak by Maze because Linda took the revelation much better than she did. When Eve found out, she accepted him fully right then and there, which could make her mentally more strong than most humans considering even Linda had to take some time away from Lucifer and Maze before accepting them. Both want to mend their relationships with Lucifer, but while Chloe is hesitant to accept him for who he truly is and left upon seeing that Lucifer and Eve were seemingly together, Eve deliberately went out of her way to find Lucifer and get what she wanted. Also, Eve is a bit of a rule-breaker, only doing things for fun, while Chloe as a police officer tries to uphold the same rules that Eve breaks.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Lucifer gets impaled through the right shoulder with a broken billiard cue.
  • Internal Reveal: Chloe finally discovers that Linda has known the truth about Lucifer for some time. Soon afterwards, she also discovers that Linda is pregnant.
  • LOL, 69: Lucifer holds a pad with the number '69' on it while bidding on the auction for the Desert Mirage.
  • Prelap: Upon being told by Maze that Linda knows about everything.
Chloe: You've known this whole time?
  • Not Hyperbole: Linda tells her doctor that she has a "truly supernatural support team", referring to Maze and Amenadiel. The doctor thinks that Linda's just talking up her friends.
  • Oh, Crap!: Linda isn't too happy to hear that her baby might be born with wings, for obvious reasons.
  • Tempting Fate: Chloe reassures Ella that it's okay that she and Lucifer met, so long as she didn't tell Lucifer about their plans for the auction. Guess how Lucifer found out about the auction?
  • Title Drop: "Can't expect the devil to suddenly make his life all about Eve".
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Eve ducked as a bottle was thrown at her. It shattered on a wall behind her, some of the shards land on a patron sitting next to her, who just brushes them off, and basically acting like if a bar brawl happened there every night.
  • Warts and All: While Linda is freaking out about the human-angel baby, all of her concerns are on how she's going to protect it, rather than the possibility that it will look like a freak. She is going to accept it, "wings and all".
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Maze gives Chloe a well-deserved one for her lying and betrayal of both her and Lucifer (and keeping Trixie from her), outright calling her weak (and pointing out that Linda did a much better job of handling it).
