Recap / Lucifer (2016) S03E05 "Welcome Back, Charlotte Richards"

Go To

Charlotte Richards is back, trying to pretend that she isn't missing several months of time.

Tropes present in this episode include:

  • And I Must Scream: It is revealed that Charlotte's soul was tortured in Hell while the Goddess inhabited her body, though it's pointed out that this had less to do with the Goddess hijacking her body and more because of her bad conduct in her first life.
  • The Atoner: Charlotte Richards wants to turn her life around and atone for an entire career spent defending criminals.
  • Back from the Dead: Charlotte had been murdered long before Lucifer's mother's essence used her body as a vessel. This is her second chance in life.
  • Brain Bleach: Lucifer is evidently traumatized for life when Charlotte, who in the previous season was possessed by his mother, starts kissing him.
Lucifer: What in Dad's name are you doing?
  • Distracted by the Sexy:
    • Lucifer's train of thought is completely derailed in the studio shooting Heavenly Pudding's commercial.
    • Earlier, Chloe manages to prove that Lucifer is not listening to her when she reverses the numbers of the set to "69", which he instantly reacts to.
  • Driven to Suicide: It turns out that the victim actually killed himself, and made it look like he was struggling with someone off camera to trigger an investigation.
  • "Freaky Friday" Flip: Portrayed realistically. Goddess' actions while inhabiting Charlotte's body ended up ruining the real Charlotte's life. In particular, her husband Elliot became fed up with Goddess' behaviour and left her, gaining full custody of the children and denying her visitation rights.
  • Heel Realization: Charlotte.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Lucifer pours himself a very stiff whiskey after Charlotte kisses him. It starts off full to the brim, then after realising what Charlotte's going through, he hands the remaining half to her.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Charlotte doesn't remember anything from when Lucifer's mother was using her body as a vessel, justified since she was in Hell during the time.
  • Mistaken for Servant: The director of Heavenly Pudding's raunchy ad mistakes Chloe for a model, asking why she is not naked.
  • My Death Is Just the Beginning: The victim was already dying from renal failure, so he decided to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak, and expose the company's dirty secret with his death.
  • Rapid-Fire "No!": Lucifer's squicked reaction at Charlotte's sudden kiss includes this, among other things.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Charlotte correctly deduces that she/her body was close with Lucifer during her "missing time", but she assumes they were lovers rather than realise the truth (her body was inhabited by the essence of Lucifer's mother).
  • Sex Sells: The Heavenly Pudding commercial features loving shots of skimpily-dressed women posing as angels. The director admits that it doesn't have anything to do with the pudding whatsoever but is guaranteed to generate sales.
  • Suicide, Not Murder: As it turned out, the Victim of the Week actually threw himself into the pudding vat. He was already dying as a result of exposure to the toxic substances that the company high-ups were having him add to the stuff, and decided to frame them for his murder in order to force a police investigation, which would result in the truth being exposed.
  • Surprise Incest: One-sided. Lucifer knows that Charlotte was his mother's vessel for months, but Charlotte didn't know that they were family until after she made out with him. His reaction to the kiss is priceless.
  • The Swear Jar: Chloe tries to use this on Trixie. Lucifer sabotages her efforts by teaching the kid some "loophole" swear words like "cluster duck", "sock sucker", and "go to shell". Trixie herself comes up with "mother flunker".
