Recap / Lucifer (2016) S03E02 "The One with the Baby Carrot"

Go To

Lucifer wants to investigate someone called the Sinnerman, but Chloe doesn't want to chase after ghosts and urban legends. Instead, she wants to investigate the death of a failed comedian.

However, Lt. Pierce knows that the Sinnerman is indeed real...

Tropes present in this episode include:

  • Actor Allusion: One of the puppets on Bobby Lowe's mocks Lucifer by calling him "Doctor Who". Tom Ellis once appeared in an episode of the show in question.
  • Actually Pretty Funny: Chloe can't help but chuckle at Lucifer's quips about the suspect's micro-penis.
  • Broken Pedestal: Ella, upon learning that Bobby Lowe really did steal the victim's jokes.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Lucifer, when Chloe tries to stop him from throwing tomatoes at Dan:
Lucifer: What, you didn't bring any? (throws another one)
  • Continuity Nod: When Pierce overhears Chloe and Lucifer talking about the Sinnerman, he asks if they're Nina Simone fans. Lucifer says that he is, in a nod to the season 1 episode which began with him covering Simone's "Sinnerman."
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: The guy who impaled the not-so-fake kidnapper from the previous episode only did it because the guy was sleeping with his girlfriend.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Pierce doesn't say much about his time chasing the Sinnerman in Chicago, except that it was messy and someone close to him ended up dead.
  • Deal with the Devil: Yes, Lucifer is the one who started the practice. In the end, he decides to dedicate himself to that part of his "work" and prove he can do it better than anyone else.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: Lucifer lambasts Dan's act because a micropenis is a medical condition (he's right, for the record). He then proceeds to make a bunch of Teeny Weenie jokes of his own.
  • Executive Meddling: Happened In-Universe to "The Bobby Lowe Show". The sitcom started out with raunchier material about the title character having a micropenis. When the network realised that kids were watching the show for the puppet characters they forced Lowe to soften the jokes and make the character's problems more family-friendly.
  • Face Framed in Shadow: Downplayed, when the killer of the shines a spotlight on Lucifer's face there is a band of light from eyebrow to cheekbone but the rest of face is in shadow making him look sinister.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Lucifer demands to know who this Bobby Lowe person is, only to be pointed to the giant billboard with Bobby Lowe's name and face on it a short distance away.
  • Heartbroken Badass: Lt. Pierce lost someone close to him back in Chicago.
  • Hurricane of Euphemisms: The term "micro-penis" comes up in the investigation; Lucifer has a lot of fun with that and a seemingly endless supply of euphemisms.
  • I Just Shot Marvin in the Face: Lucifer accidentally shoots the actor playing Bobby Lowe (it isn't fatal) when trying to put on the gun-puppet.
  • Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique: Pierce hands the suspect over to Lucifer, hoping that the latter can make him talk.
  • Plagiarism in Fiction: Bobby Lowe stole jokes from JD Woodstock (who it turns out also stole the jokes) and Bobby's warmup comedian Sheila claims he stole material from her too.
  • Produce Pelting: Lucifer came to the stand-up comedy routine armed with a bunch of tomatoes, which he gleefully —and unapologetically— throws at Dan.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Bobby Lowe used the stolen micropenis jokes to get a massive sitcom deal. When the show became popular with a younger audience the network forced Lowe to cut the penis jokes and focus on the puppet characters. Lowe is now trapped by his contract doing a show he can't stand
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Pierce is proving himself to be one. He warns Lucifer that while the Sinnerman is indeed real, he is very dangerous. He also says that Chloe should be left out of the investigation, since she has a kid; Lucifer agrees with him.
  • Shout-Out: The quote used for the episode title is formatted like the Idiosyncratic Episode Titles of Friends.
  • Something Else Also Rises: Lucifer's angel wings pop out when he's about to go to bed with an attractive woman. She's actually into it, but Lucifer cuts short their encounter so he can cut them off again.
Lucifer: Sorry, I don't usually suffer from premature...unfurling.
  • Teeny Weenie: Bobby Lowe's character originally had one, though it was eventually written out to focus on more family-friendly jokes. The comedian the act is based on has one for real.
  • Tough Room: Averted; Dan's "jokes" really are terrible.
