He's Our You

Written by Edward Kitsis & Adam Horowitz.
Directed by Greg Yaitanes.

"You were right about me. I am a killer."
Sayid Jarrah

In flashbacks, Sayid impresses his stern father by killing a chicken when his brother, Omer, fails to do so. After assassinating a man in Moscow, he meets with Ben, who tells him his work is done. Later, Ben tracks Sayid down while he is building houses in the Dominican Republic, and tells him Locke is dead. He tells Sayid that Hurley is being watched, and that he is a killer, whether he wants to be or not. The night before Ajira 316 takes off, Sayid meets Ilana at a bar. She brings him back to his hotel room, then captures him, claiming to be a bounty hunter hired to bring him to Guam.

In 1977, Ben tells Sayid about his meeting with Richard, and that he can help him. Horace fails to get answers from Sayid, and decides to turn him over to DHARMA's torturer, Oldham. Sawyer tries to cut a deal with Sayid, to allow him to live at the Barracks under the pretense of being a defector from the Others, but Sayid refuses. Sayid witnesses Roger abuse Ben when he tries to bring him another sandwich. Oldham interrogates Sayid, but assumes he is insane when he admits to being from the future. Senior DHARMA members hold a meeting, in which they decide to execute Sayid, thinking he is a spy. Sawyer tries to help him escape, but he again refuses. Ben creates a fire in the Barracks as a distraction, then helps Sayid escape, in exchange for Sayid taking him to the Others. They are found in the jungle by Jin. Sayid knocks him out when he calls Sawyer, then shoots Ben and leaves him for dead.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • Abusive Parents: Roger Linus is shown to be this again, beating Ben and breaking his glasses offscreen. Sayid notes that his father was a hard man as well.
  • Became Their Own Antithesis: Sayid becomes quite the manipulator himself towards young Ben.
  • Eiffel Tower Effect: When Sayid meets Ben in Moscow, the Kremlin and St. Basil's Cathedral are prominently featured in the background.
  • Evil Counterpart: As DHARMA's torturer, Oldham is their equivalent to Sayid, which Sawyer lampshades.
    Sawyer: He's our you.
  • Faceā€“Heel Turn: Sayid turns on Jin, beating him unconscious, and shoots 12-year old Ben, signalling the darkest turn in his character.
  • Honey Trap: Ilana allows Sayid to think she's interested in sleeping with him, only to pull a gun on him when they get back to the room and reveal she's a Bounty Hunter hired to bring him to Guam.
  • Mistaken for Prostitute: Sayid briefly wonders if Ilana is a prositute trying to solicit him. She assures him she's not "a professional at anything".
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: A young Ben breaks Sayid out in order to save him from execution. Sayid repays him with a bullet to the chest.
  • Start of Darkness: A young Sayid killing a chicken is implied to be this for him.
  • Tears of Remorse: Sayid briefly sheds tears after shooting young Ben.
  • Then Let Me Be Evil: With his shooting of the young Ben, Sayid essentially gives up on redemption and accepts that he is a killer.
  • Think of the Children!: Amy convinces the rest of DHARMA to go through with killing Sayid with this argument.
  • Truth Serum: Sayid is forcibly given truth serum injected onto a sugar cube. He truthfully tells the DHARMA officials about how he came to the island originally, about being from the future, but they dismiss him as being crazy.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Sayid shooting young Ben in the chest. Even Sayid himself seems to realize he crossed a line with this.
