In flashbacks, Sayid impresses his stern father by killing a chicken when his brother, Omer, fails to do so. After assassinating a man in Moscow, he meets with Ben, who tells him his work is done. Later, Ben tracks Sayid down while he is building houses in the Dominican Republic, and tells him Locke is dead. He tells Sayid that Hurley is being watched, and that he is a killer, whether he wants to be or not. The night before Ajira 316 takes off, Sayid meets Ilana at a bar. She brings him back to his hotel room, then captures him, claiming to be a bounty hunter hired to bring him to Guam.
In 1977, Ben tells Sayid about his meeting with Richard, and that he can help him. Horace fails to get answers from Sayid, and decides to turn him over to DHARMA's torturer, Oldham. Sawyer tries to cut a deal with Sayid, to allow him to live at the Barracks under the pretense of being a defector from the Others, but Sayid refuses. Sayid witnesses Roger abuse Ben when he tries to bring him another sandwich. Oldham interrogates Sayid, but assumes he is insane when he admits to being from the future. Senior DHARMA members hold a meeting, in which they decide to execute Sayid, thinking he is a spy. Sawyer tries to help him escape, but he again refuses. Ben creates a fire in the Barracks as a distraction, then helps Sayid escape, in exchange for Sayid taking him to the Others. They are found in the jungle by Jin. Sayid knocks him out when he calls Sawyer, then shoots Ben and leaves him for dead.
