Recap / Little Princess Special: A Merry Little Christmas

Go To

We open on a decorated tree, and Puss and Scruff asleep by the fire. The Princess enters, yelling, "Christmas!", and excitedly tells the narrator about her presents— chocolate coins, a sleigh and a toy robot. She goes out to play on her new sleigh (while Puss scares Scruff with the robot), walking past the King, Queen, and Chef who want her to help make the Christmas dinner, but when she goes out, there's no snow.

She's disappointed, but becomes happy again when the Maid tells her that she has a phone call from Great-Uncle Walter. She excitedly rushes in and answers the phone. Walter wishes Princess a merry Christmas and she complains about the lack of snow. He tries to share some wisdom with her, but can't quite remember the advice, eventually saying, "If you want something, all you have to do is dance." He amends it to "ask", but by then, the Princess has already hung up and dashed into the kitchen.

She tells the adults that they need to dance for snow, but they're too busy cooking. She volunteers to watch the turkey while everyone else dances, so they go out and dance, but it doesn't snow and the adults soon become puffed out and bored of it.

Disappointed, the Princess goes in and helps the Chef peel the vegetables, but a sprout escapes. She chases after it and finds that it's now snowing after all. She has a fun time playing in the snow, but unfortunately forgets about the turkey timer, which goes off unnoticed.

The Princess continues to play and enthuses about Great-Uncle Walter, but then hears an exclamation from the Chef. As it turns out, the turkey is burnt. To make matters worse, Great-Uncle Walter isn't coming because he's snowed in. The Princess goes into the living room to sulk, but then has an idea: have everyone dance again.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work, and the Princess is sad at dinner (which is still pretty substantial despite the lack of turkey). However, she gets an idea— bring the Christmas dinner and tree to Great-Uncle Walter, using the sleigh. The pets follow in their bed, pulled by the Princess's toy robot. Thus, everyone gets a merry Christmas after all (they even get to have turkey, courtesy of Walter) and they pretend to be robots.

This episode provides examples of

  • Artistic License – Animal Care: The Maid throws the pets outside for knocking over a Christmas tree... in the snow! In real life, they could've gotten hypothermia from that!
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Interruption: The narrator sees the decorated tree and says, "It must be—-". He is then cut off by the Princess yelling, "Christmas!".
  • Buffy Speak:
    • Princess refers to watching the timer for the cooking turkey as "do[ing] the turkey ding-a-ling-y thingy", then later she calls the timer the "ding-a-ling-y thing".
    • During the first dancing scene, the narrator notes that the Princess has her "merry" back.
    • The Princess calls Walter's mobility scooter a "wheelie chair".
  • Christmas Episode: In case you couldn't tell, yes, this episode takes place on Christmas.
  • Cool Old Guy: Discussed when Princess says that Great-Uncle Walter is lots of fun because he plays all the same games she does.
  • Damned by Faint Praise: When the turkey is burnt, the Princess says hesitantly, "I like it crispy".
  • Dreaming of a White Christmas: Zigzagged. It's Christmas, and the Princess goes out to sleigh... but there is no snow. Walter suggests dancing (or asking) for it so everyone dances, but there's still no snow. Later, it does snow, but when Walter gets snowed in, the Princess has everybody dance again to make the snow go away. The snow never does go away, but they get to see Walter anyway.
  • Exposed to the Elements: When everybody dances in the snow, the Admiral still has his pants rolled up and is barefoot.
  • Faint in Shock: The Chef passes out when the Princess calls the burnt turkey "crispy". When he wakes up, he doesn't get up immediately; he just lies there for awhile.
  • Happy Dance: When the Maid tells the Princess that Great-Uncle Walter is calling, the Princess does a little dance of joy.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: When the Princess crashes into the Gardener and sends him swinging on a piece of tinsel, he says, "I should have my own series!".
  • Living Toys: Implied for the toy robot, who at times seems to express emotion.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: When the Princess hears that Great-Uncle Walter isn't coming for Christmas because he's snowed in, she feels guilty because she believes she made it snow (as she initiated the "snow dance").
  • Not So Above It All: At the end, everybody pretends to be robots, even the Maid and Queen.
  • Pun: During the "snow dance" scene, the Princess enthuses about looking forward to a "great sleigh, great snow, and Great-Uncle Walter."
  • Speak in Unison: During the King's toast, everyone says in unison, "Merry Christmas, apart from Great-Uncle Walter".
  • Special Edition Title: In the intro, Princess says, "Hello!" at one point and is in her winter clothes, and the objects are replaced with Christmas themed objects such as robins and Christmas crackers.
  • Stock "Yuck!": The Princess, as is typical for cartoon kids, doesn't like sprouts.
  • Too Unhappy to Be Hungry: When the Princess is moping about Walter's absence, she doesn't want her chocolate coin.
