- The Rival: The title rivals are Samantha Higgins, a tomboyish girl who gets Laura's crush Jimmy Hill's attention when Laura starts acting more feminine in order to get Jimmy to notice her as love material, and... surprisingly not the rival team competing with Charles and Jonathan for the freight contract, but the freight job itself, which Caroline sees as a rival for Charles's presence and attention once he starts staying away for weeks.
- Unknown Rival: It's never shown if Sam Higgins is competing for Jimmy's attention or even knows that Laura sees her as a potential rival, but she mostly seems oblivious to that.
- When You Coming Home, Dad?: What Caroline and Mary are afraid will happen if Charles keeps on with his freight business, which would keep him far away from town for days a week.
