  • An Aesop:
    • Don't change yourself for somebody you like, Be Yourself.
    • If a job will keep you away from your family for too long, you better check if it's worth it with them before you go for it.
  • Bridal Carry: Jonathan runs to the restaurant with Charles in his arms to celebrate the freight contract.
  • Crush Filter: Laura when she's face-to-face with Jimmy and sees him as a sharp-dressed gentleman with sideburns and realizes her feelings for him. Later on, he sees her as a elegantly dressed Proper Lady and realizes his feelings for her before they have their first kiss.
  • Dream Sequence: Laura has one where she and Jimmy Hill run in the field dressed like characters of a romance novel, and he gets ready to kiss her when she wakes up on the floor, having fallen off the bed and with Mary questioning what she was doing there.
  • Fake Boobs: In her final effort to be noticed by Jimmy, Laura stuffs apples down the front of her dress, only to be laughed at by the class when everyone sees how fake they are, and further humiliated when they fall out of her dress.

  • Foreign Queasine: When Charles and Jonathan go to a French restaurant to celebrate the freight deal, they are completely confused by the French names and dumbfounded when they figure out what escargot is:
Jonathan: Them's Snails!
François the bartender: Of course... Escargot.
Jonathan: Charles... If this is how rich people eat, I'd rather be poor.
  • The Rival: The title rivals are Samantha Higgins, a tomboyish girl who gets Laura's crush Jimmy Hill's attention when Laura starts acting more feminine in order to get Jimmy to notice her as love material, and... surprisingly not the rival team competing with Charles and Jonathan for the freight contract, but the freight job itself, which Caroline sees as a rival for Charles's presence and attention once he starts staying away for weeks.
  • Unknown Rival: It's never shown if Sam Higgins is competing for Jimmy's attention or even knows that Laura sees her as a potential rival, but she mostly seems oblivious to that.
  • When You Coming Home, Dad?: What Caroline and Mary are afraid will happen if Charles keeps on with his freight business, which would keep him far away from town for days a week.
