As Lizzie and Josie prepare for their long awaited sweet sixteen party, Alaric finds himself preoccupied with the latest supernatural arrival – one that hits a little too close to home. Elsewhere, Penelope's latest plan gives MG one last shot at impressing Lizzie on her big day, while an unexpected betrayal causes tensions to boil over between Hope and Rafael.
- Buried Alive: Josie is knocked out and buried alive by her resurrected mother in zombie mode. Hope, MG, and Penelope manage to find and dig her out before she suffocates.
- Combat Pragmatist: When confronted by the Necromancer, Alaric simply hits him over the head with a shovel, not even giving the other guy a chance.
- Death Amnesia: At first, after being resurrected, Jo can only remember her last day on Earth wherein she was getting ready to be married to Ric before she was killed by her brother Kai. Near the end of the episode though she tells her family that she remembers watching over them and being at Peace and promises them that she will meet them there together again on day.
- Heroic Sacrifice: Josette has her daughters drain the magic animating her out of her body, effectively killing her again. This is because she knows that, as long as she's walking around, she remains a danger to her daughters.
- It's All About Me: Lizzie treats the party as if it's her personal debutante ball rather than a birthday party for her and Josie. She has Josie help her get ready without leaving any time for Josie herself to get ready. When Penelope points that out, Lizzie doesn't want to hear it.
- The Mirror Shows Your True Self: Jo for all intents and purposes looks exactly the same as she did when she died however when she is looking around Ric's office and passes by a mirror her reflection resembles a decayed corpse revealing her zombie nature
- Our Zombies Are Different: Josette Laughlin, the twins' biological mother, comes back to life after being killed on her and Alaric's wedding day. For the most part, she looks, feels, and acts human. However, at certain points, her eyes go all white and she becomes a zombie under someone else's control. When Hope, MG, and Penelope are looking for Josie, who has been Buried Alive, actual zombies start climbing out of the ground and attack them. Luckily, a tribrid, a vampire, and a witch can handle them pretty easily.
- The Reveal: The reason that Caroline has been conspicuously absent from the series so far is because she is looking up leads to try and find a way to save Lizzie and Josie from the Merge when they turn 22.
- Title Drop: The title comes from Lizzie who refers to Josette as this while she is talking to Josie, since she sees Caroline as their mom and acknowledging Jo as such would be a betrayal of her.
