Go To

Luz's latest attempt to spend time with Amity is interfered with by her twin siblings.

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Adaptational Karma: Edric and Emira don't escape punishment for trying to steal Amity's diary and letting Luz take all the blame as they're captured by Otabin who intends to sew them into a book for their actions.
  • Beyond the Impossible: To save Edric and Emira after they're trapped in a book, Luz uses her magic to free them, a task the twins and Amity are stunned by.
  • Bully Hunter: Anyone who tries to bully people under the Wailing Star's glow is subjected to punishment as a result.
  • Call-Back: The twins bring up how Luz saved Amity at the covention and healed her along with Amity staying by Luz's side the entire time she was unconscious.
  • Crush Blush: Luz does this several times when she thinks about Amity or sees her doing something she finds sweet. The twins' constant flirting causes her entire face to heat up. And of course, Amity still flares up around Luz.
  • Ear Ache: After everything the twins did all night (and the fact that they were making kissing faces at her and Luz), Amity decides to continue guiding the karma laser by dragging them home pulling their ears the whole way.
  • Face Palm: Eda does this when she learns Luz doesn't know the value of a snail, especially platinum pieces.
Eda: Of course, the richest person in Bonesborough would be unaware that they're stupidly wealthy...
  • For Want Of A Nail: Luz discovers her feelings for Amity near the end of "Lost in Language" instead of "Escaping Expulsion".
  • The Gadfly: Edric and Emira are still teasing Amity for her crush on Luz and once they meet the princess for themselves, they do the same to her and triplify it. After Luz admits to Eda that she's just realized she has a crush on Amity now, Eda and King briefly tease her.
  • Given Name Reveal: Odalia's middle name is Chesire, as said in the very first line of the chapter.
  • History Repeats: Amity feels this is what happened after Luz agrees to stop trying to be her friend, seeing it as a repeat of what happened between her and Willow.
  • Internal Reveal: After hearing Amity's diary pages under the effects of the Wailing Star, the Blight twins discard their theory abot Luz being the Golden Guard and figure out that she's the princess.
  • If Only You Knew: Luz brushes off Zul's claims that Amity like likes her.
Zul: (smirks, wiggles her eyebrows) Minty wants to talk to you, huh? Sounds pretty serious, to me, what if she confesses her love to you?
Luz: (slightly blushes) I mean, she's cute for sure. But Amity, like me? If anything, I'm more than sure that she still slightly resents me...
  • Laser-Guided Karma: For damaging books and nearly fracturing Luz and Amity's finally stable friendship, Edric and Emira are sewn into a book by Otabin and nearly trapped within it after the Wailing Star's magic ceases. Amity later drags them home via ear pulling.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Luz's curiosity leads her to listen in on what Amity thinks about her now right as Amity catches her and the twins in her secret hideout with her damaged diary. After the twins are captured, Amity tells Luz to not help saying she'll make things worse, which causes Luz to break off their friendship and respect Amity's wish to stay away from her.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Odalia has a vision about Luz and Amity fighting involving the twins and angrily tells Edric and Emira not to go to the library that night. As a result, she ends up instigating them into going anyway; this is lampshaded as oracles aren't supposed to try changing the future, otherwise they'll create far worse outcomes.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Odalia warns Edric and Emira to avoid the library the night of the Wailing Star without explaining her vision; because of this, she nearly seals their fates.
  • The Reveal:
    • Hooty says Baba Yaga once trained a girl who had a similar sword to the one Luz has, implying it was Azura.
    • The royal family uses platinum pieces, snails worth far more than gold snails, as currency.
  • Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense: Unlike the populace of the Isles who uses gold and silver for snails, the royal family has platinum pieces with Belos giving Luz a pouch of coins every two weeks. However, no one taught Luz how money works so she didn't know that one platinum piece is worth 1,000 gold snails.
Luz: Wha- Really!? No wonder that smoothie guy was hugging me in Bonesborough...
Eda rolled her eyes with a chuckle. Luz must've been ending people's debts left and right without even realizing it...
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Hoping to regain control of her family's future, Odalia has a vision where she sees her children with Luz at the library during the Wailing Star where Luz and Amity end up fighting as well as the twins' fate. She tells Edric and Emira not to go only for them to disobey her just to see what's gonna happen that night while also getting revenge on Amity for getting them grounded.
  • Shout-Out: To explain they're delivering Amity's lunch bag, Edric and Emira mimic Team Rocket's motto:
Edric: We're wishers on a noble mission.
Emira: A quest, given to us by the lord of our house.
Edric: To protect the Isles from starvation!
Emira: To feed all the Witches within our nation!
    Amity: (groans) Please just stop...
  • Sigh of Love: Luz lets one slip as she watches Amity read to kids at the library.
  • Spanner in the Works: Odalia sees Luz as the single interference to her family's guaranteed future coming undone.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: When Amity sees Luz hiding in the kid's corner, Luz stands up and says she wasn't staring at her.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Seeing how they screwed up Amity's friendship with Luz, Edric and Emira encourage their sister to make things right and agree to keep Luz's secret.
  • The Un-Reveal: Hooty mentions that his old owner used to train a girl with a sword like Luz's but before he can tell Luz the girl's name, King slams the door open.
  • Wham Episode: Luz discovers she has a crush on Amity, who theorizes that Luz's power is an increased form of magic called "Sage's Instinct".
  • Wide Eyes and Shrunken Irises: Luz gets these when she sees the Bat Queen's babies and then Eda has them when she sees the platinum pieces in Luz's purse.
  • You Are Grounded!: Edric and Emira had been grounded due to Amity ratting them out for skipping classes. When Odalia tells them not to go to the library, she threatens to extend their grounding should they ignore her warning.
