Recap / Kirby Right Back At Ya S 1 E 16 A Fish Called Kine

Go To

Tiff gains an admirer from the sea in Kine who wants to go on a date with her, but can't due to being unable to live on the land. Seeing this, King Dedede cuts a deal with Kine to supply a mobile fish tank for him in exchange for the secret location of the rainbow coral reef, which the King plans to bulldoze to make way for a new castle.

Tropes

  • Adaptational Wimp: Unlike the games, Kine can't survive outside of water, which is what keeps him and Tiff from interacting.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Kine's idea of visiting the surface world is a fish tank with wheels and a speaking trumpet. This, however, means he can't physically interact with Tiff at all, while Tuff, Kirby, Fololo and Falala have to drag him everywhere.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: Kine, to Tiff. Justified when the former is an ocean sunfish, and the latter isn't interested in an Interspecies Romance.
  • Dub Species Change: The English dub refers to Kine as a blue surgeon fish rather than a sunfish. The Italian dub, meanwhile, referrs to Kine as a European hake (or rather a fictional subspecies of it, complete with the fake Latin name of Nasellus Loquacis ("Nasello loquace", "Chatterbox hake").
  • Exit, Pursued by a Bear: Dedede and Escargoon, submarine wrecked and plan foiled, are forced to swim for it when Joe the shark shows up.
  • Heroic Second Wind: Dedede's mechanized submarine tosses Kirby around like a rag doll until he inhales the propeller and becomes Tornado Kirby, whereupon he turns the tables and wrecks the submarine.
  • Imagine Spot: At the end of the episode, when Kirby finds Dedede's goggles and snorkel, Kine proceeds to have one of these about him and Tiff swimming together hand-in-fin with Tiff wearing said goggles.
  • Improperly Paranoid: King Dedede insists on wearing goggles and a snorkel inside the submarine, despite Escargoon telling him he doesn't need to.
  • Interspecies Romance: Kine, a fish, falls in love with Tiff, a Cappy girl, and the two even go on a date. Dedede and Escargoon even lampshade the whole idea:
Dedede: I've heard that opposites attract, but I ain't never seen a couple this opposite!
Escargoon: It's the world's first surf 'n' turf relationship!
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Tiff keeps pointing out to Kine that the land and sea are too different for a relationship to work out. While harsh, she's proven right when Kine suffers severe difficulties on the land.
  • Manipulative Bastard: King Dedede arranges to help Kine live on land in exchange for the location of the Rainbow Coral Reef, but keeps the reason of why he wants said location a secret. Kine is so desperate to meet up with Tiff that he doesn't think twice.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Kine is horrified when he learns what Dedede wants with the Rainbow Coral Reef and that he pointed him right towards it for the sake of being with Tiff.
  • Oh, Crap!: When Kine confesses to sending the seashell love letter, Tiff dons a particularly hilarious expression of wide-eyed shock.
  • Oxygenated Underwater Bubbles: Kine breathes some of these to save Tiff and Tuff from drowning.
  • Rule of Three: Kine suffers three disasters while on land - nearly getting diced up by Chef Kawasaki, snatched up by Dyna Blade and landing in Mayor Len's bathtub - before he realises that living on land isn't for him.
  • Shout-Out: Both the English and Japanese titles of the episode reference A Fish Called Wanda and The Spy Who Loved Me, respectively.
  • Underwater City: King Dedede's plan is to build himself an underwater summer home on top of a coral reef.
