Recap / King Of The Hill S 8 E 6 After The Mold Rush

Go To

When Hank's house sustains minor water damage days before the Arlen Parade of Homes, a man from the insurance company sets out to get rich by shaking the Hills down for money with needless tests and repairs.

Tropes:

  • Beat Them at Their Own Game: After Hank discovers that his insurance agent and the company contracted to clean up his house are running a scam where they get money from his insurance deductibles, he gets a license to be a mold clean up specialist and uses Bill's fungus infested feet to threaten the insurance adjustor by reporting his house to be torn apart just as badly as Hank's own home. At the very end, the Hills' house is declared mold free, and Hank is also given a reimbursement for any unnecessary treatments to his house.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Hank's house is taken off the Parade of Homes for that year, but the insurance scammers declare Hank's house free of mold, albeit with some arm pulling.
  • Captive Audience: After his house is declared mold free, remodeled, and given a reimbursement for any unnecessary treatment, Hank forces the mold inspector and insurance adjuster to listen to a boring speech about the history of his house, the latter two's actions caused the Hills' house to be taken out of that year's parade of homes.
  • Meaningful Background Event: When Hank realizes his insurance agent, the mold tester and the mold inspector are all in cahoots, you can see a sign in the background reading "Cafeteria for Allied Corporate Group employees only".
  • Insurance Fraud: What the mold ends up being after the initial bit discovered in Bobby's room. Hank manages to get them to confess to their scheme after going into their house to check for mold himself.
  • Kick the Dog: As if having to deal with mold inspectors wasn't enough. On the day the Parade of Homes is taking place, the Hills are evacuated, with Hank wearing nothing but a plastic robe in front of the entire parade group.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After Hank realizes his home is being targeted as a scam by his insurance company, Hank gets his own license on being a mold specialist and decides to inspect his insurance adjustor Holguin's home. He purposely does the exam near Bill's fungus infested feet and casually states everything that will happen to Holguin's home, the same stuff he has been doing to Hank's. At the end, after Hank's house is declared mold free, Hank forces Holguin to sit through a boring speech about the history of his home, since his scam caused his home to be taken off of the Parade of Homes for that year.
  • Potty Failure: Hank thinks Bobby's had one when he wakes him and Peggy up by yelling that he's drowning and his bed and shorts are wet, but it turns out the water is leaking from the spot in the wall where Hank hammered a nail into earlier to hang a small cupboard on, accidentally puncturing a water pipe in the process.
  • Special Guest: Chris Elliot as Rob Holguin.
