Recap / King Of The Hill S 8 E 20 Hanks Back

Go To

With his back giving him trouble, Hank reluctantly attends yoga classes to try and alleviate the pain, but a workman's comp agent accuses Hank of faking his injuries.

Tropes:

  • Batman Gambit: At the hearing, Hank is accused of Insurance Fraud because he was seen walking normally, and the jury panel couldn't believe that a seemingly ordinary American like him would take yoga lessons, so he brings in Yogi Victor as a character witness. When Hank is told Victor's antics are not helping him, Hank says that's what he's trying to prove: that no sane level-headed American would willingly accept the help of someone like that unless they were in unbearable pain, and were extremely desperate, due to not having access to more conventinal medical treatment. With his testimony, and the actions of Victor, Hank is declared not guilty of wrongdoing, and offered more worker's comp until he fully recovers.
  • Cassandra Truth: An agent accuses Hank of injury fraud despite recovering via Yoga. He then gets made fun of for claiming it helped him. He decides to bring in the yoga instructor to prove his point.
  • The Cuckoolander Was Right: While he is a weird, insufferable hippie, Victor's yoga classes indeed fix Hank right up (not completely, but enough that Hank isn't in crippling pain).
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: The insurance adjuster assumes Hank's insistence that he wants to get back to work as soon as possible and that he takes pride in doing a good job as him playing it up so he can get money. This isn't simply a matter of her being cynical either, as she's a Smug Snake who is borderline gleeful at getting the chance to drag him before a jury panel for insurance fraud.
  • Honor Before Reason: Hank at first completely refuses to take time off work to heal his back or receive worker's comp. He takes the yoga session because it heals him a little quicker.
  • Insurance Fraud: After Hank decides to accept workers' comp., he seeks medical attention to treat his back pain, and the first doctor he sees tries get him to prove he's faking his pain to pull off a scam by throwing things at him with no warning to get him to instinctively dodge, and the second doctor tries to help him pull a scam in order to get half the money and gives him a business card for an Ambulance Chaser. After Hank recovers from his back pain, thanks to the yoga lessons, he's accused of trying to pull a scam when he's photographed walking normally, and he's only able to prove his innocence thanks to the antics of Yogi Victor.
  • New-Age Retro Hippie: Victor is exactly the kind of stereotypical hippie type you'd expect a yoga instructor to be.
  • Not Helping Your Case: When Hank brings in Victor to the hearing, the jury panel tells him that Victor is not helping him at all. Hank responds that's what he's trying to prove, that a normal person like him wouldn't ask the Yogi for help unless they were extremely desperate.
  • Serious Business: Hank is so devoted to his work, that he would rather continue with a bad back than accept any worker's compensation. When he gets one in the mail, he is certainly not happy.
  • Smug Snake: The insurance adjuster Hank sees is one, and always has a smug smile plastered on her face.
  • Special Guest: Johnny Depp as Yogi Victor the yoga instructor.
  • Take a Third Option: After Hank is cleared of the Insurance Fraud charges, he's offered more workers' comp until he fully recovers, which includes time off work, and more yoga lessons from Victor. Hank compromises by leading the yoga breaks at work.
