The alliance between cursed spirits and curse users forged by Mahito and Pseudo-Geto finally makes their move to seal Satoru Gojo on October 31st, 2018.
Tropes found in Shibuya Incident Arc:
- Asshole Victim: All the Cursed Spirits are this, as well as Pseudo Geto's Curse Users. While Hanami, Jogo, and Dagon are given the Alas, Poor Villain treatment, they still are curses with high body counts of innocent lives. Their fates were brutal, but deserved. Dagon is even seen eating civilians whole onscreen. Similarly, Haruta is the direct cause of Sukuna's massacre of Shibuya due to his cheap attack on Megumi (and is in turn killed by him), and Ogami and Awasaka used to be serial killers before their deaths at the hands of Toji.
- The Bad Guy Wins: Kenjaku and Sukuna are the only true victors of the Shibuya Incident, with the former successfully sealing Satoru Gojo and the latter closer to regaining full strength.
- Big Damn Heroes: Several, one notable instance is when Todo arrives to help Itadori during the battle with Mahito.
- Body Horror: Where to begin?
- Pseudo-Geto opens his head to reveal that he's a sentient brain inhabiting Geto's body.
- As always, Mahito's Idle Transfiguration is a prime source of this. His victims end up distorted into grotesque forms left and right, some are turned into walls blocking off the halls of the subway station. You can actually see their faces on the surfaces. During his fight with Itadori, Mahito uses multiple transfigured Humans as weapons and meat shields, at least one was turned into an enclosed space like interconnected tunnels.
- Nanami's burns from Jogo's attack are quite horrific. The left side of his body is horribly burned, half of his face is skeletal and he appears to be missing his eye. It was a miracle he could still walk, let alone fight.
- Break the Cutie: Poor Yuji is put through the emotional wringer in this arc. First his sensei, who acted to hold off the kid's execution, gets sealed away in the Prison Realm, then he gets beaten to near death by Choso before being fed 10 of Sukuna's fingers and having Sukuna take over his body. Sukuna then goes on to win 2 fights while causing an enormous amount of collateral damage and gives back control to Yuji so the poor kid can see the casualties of Sukuna's fights so Yuji feels responsible. The guy can barely keep it together as he rushes to find someway to help stop the Curses, keeping himself from losing it after he sees Mahito kill Nanami. Only Nanami's words and teachings keep Yuji from going catatonic as he pursues Mahito. To his horror, he sees Mahito switch places with his clone so that the Curse can use Idle Transfiguration on Nobara. Seeing his fellow first year collapse to the ground, sends him into a Heroic BSoD.
- Chekhov's Gun: The Prison Realm, earlier mentioned by Geto, comes in play here.
- Darkest Hour: Gojo is sealed, Sukuna is fed 10 fingers by Jogo and later he fights Mahoraga. In the aftermath of the fighting Shibuya is decimated, there are massive civilian causalities, millions of powerful curses have been released and Yuji is once again sentenced to death.
- Dirty Coward: Contrasting his nihilistic philosophy, Mahito tries to flee for his life after Yuji agrees with his assessment. He displays this behavior multiple times in this arc when he feels like he's about to lose.
- Downer Ending: Pretty much everyone who isn't named Kenjaku and Ryomen Sukuna ends up losing heavily.
- Face Death with Dignity: Nanami, with half his body above the waist burnt to a crisp and in a dazed state, cuts down a horde of Mahito's minions before the Curse touches his back. Realising he's about to die and noticing Yuji approaching, he calmly smiles and gives the younger sorcerer some words of encouragement before he explodes into a bloody mess.
- Nobara, after Mahito touches her face and having a flashback to her life before coming to Jujutsu High, smiles and requests that Yuji tell everyone that "Life wasn't so bad," before her eye explodes and leaves her on the ground.
- Halloween Episode: The entire arc takes place on Halloween night in 2018. This is intentional on Geto's part as the Disaster Curses needed a large gathering of civilians to use as hostages when it came time to confront Gojo, and the massive number of partygoers celebrating the holiday throughout Shibuya were the ideal Human Shields to prevent Gojo from going all out.
- Kick the Dog: Sukuna commits an epic one of this as he possesses Yuji to kill thousands of innocent people, and gives him the control at the last moment.
- Laser-Guided Karma: Mahito finally ends up paying the piper for his numerous crimes via an asskicking by Todo and Itadori, and then sealed up by Geto. His fellow Special Grades and the Curse Users also end up paying for their sins with lives.
- Moral Myopia: Displayed by the Special Grade Curses. Dagon in particular rages to the group confronting him about he and his fellow curses (Hanami in particular) have names while Naobito Zen'in explains his technique to the Special Grade. This is after Dagon vomits up a large pile of human bones bigger than his own Cursed Womb form.
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Megumi summons Mahoraga after being seriously injured in order to take down, which is already a bit overkill. Mahoraga ends up drawing Sukuna's attention after incinerating Jogo. Blood Knight that he is, Sukuna decides to fight the shikigami, which ends up causing massive Collateral Damage.
- Opponent Switch: Mahito ends up in a uniquely disadvantageous situation fighting Yuji while his clone faces Nobara. Only the main body can use Idle Transfiguration on other people, which he can't use on Yuji because of Sukuna, while Nobara's Sympathetic Magic directly damages his soul even when she attacks his clone. Mahito's solution is to discreetly switch places so the main body can incapacitate Nobara with Idle Transfiguration.
- "Pop!" Goes the Human: Mahito's technique is used this way via his Touch of Death. He makes Nanami explode from the waist up, he turns a bystander into a Transfigured Human that bursts into a bloody mess in order to blind Itadori, and does a downplayed variation to Kugisaki by making her left eye explode.
- The Mole: Kokichi Muta is revealed to be this for the Curses.
- The Reveal: "Suguru Geto" has been Dead All Along and his body is being puppetted by a millenia old, body surfing curse user named Kenjaku. Said sorcerer also took the name of Noritoshi Kamo, thus being behind the Death Paintings as well.
- War Arc: Shibuya is the long-awaited clash between the Disaster Curses, their Curse User allies and the Sorcerers. Even though the heroes had a good feeling that the Curses were planning something big, the arc starts as a somewhat standard rescue mission before escalating once Satoru Gojo is sealed.
- Web Comic Time: Shibuya Incident Arc takes place within a few hours at most on Halloween 2018, but it takes more than a year to cover it.
- Wham Episode: Everyone, but Suguru Geto (actually Kenjaku) and Ryomen Sukuna, loses, Gojo is sealed, and the heroes have to find a way to unseal him. Yuji Itadori is essentially banished from Jujutsu High and is now being hunted by Yuta Okkotsu.
